National Hurling League 2012

Munster is wide open at this early stage, but it looks like Kilkennys biggest challengers might be outside Munster this year. Cork, Limerick and Clare in the early stages of putting a team together, while Tipperary and Waterford seem to be in the early stages of taking their teams apart. Limerick could well be moved into that second category if the weekends performance keeps up.

Fair enough , naming Gortnahoe was anecdotal - The main point still stands!

Same old problem still for the Dubs. We need to find a goal scorer and quick or else we will be challenging Waterford for relegation.

Some interesting games in two weeks time which will give a far better indication as to where sides are at.

Dublin host Cork in Croke Park and a win for JBM’s men and they will have one foot in the semi and any chance of being sucked into a relegation scrap will be gone, while a defeat for the Dubs will have them under a bit of pressure, especially as their next two games after that are away ot both Kilkenny and Waterford.

Waterford host Kilkenny and with all things not sounding too well in Waterford a hammering off Kilkenny won;t do morale or the management team much good. While Galway v Tipp will also be an interesting game as well, should give a far clearer indication as to where Galway with their fresh blood are at, they took a fair hammering off Tipp in the league last year which really was the beginning of the end for McIntyre. Big game for both counties for different reasons

In 1b Clare host Antrim in Cusack Park, there has been nothing between the sides when they met over the past two seasons, Clare winning both by a point and after their win over Wexford yesterday and a two week break to prepare for this Antrim will quietly fancy their chances of an upset. While Davy will be looking for more momentum, it will be interesting to see does he go with the same 15 from the Limerick game or will he look to blood a couple of the younger lads.

Offaly can send Wexford even further into the relegation zone with a win in Wexford Park. They put up a big score and will be targetting this. Wexford meet Laois in the last round of the league for what could be the wooden spoon decider, and they would more than likely face off again a week later in the relegation play off as well.

While Limerick seem to run out of steam after 20 minutes against Clare and looked like a team struggling for fitness, will be interesting to see do they go hell for leather at the fitness over the next two weeks and hope that they would have enough to account for Laois with heavy legs, which you would expect they would

Walsh Park my hole.

Huh?

It’s down for Walsh park pal.

That the club championship structure is to blame for O’Meara struggling to make it as an inter-county hurler?
His club hasn’t been prominent in the County Championship in years.

Tis all Len Gaynors fault

Could Wexford have had a softer start playing Antrim and Offaly?
Both teams short key men because of the All-Ireland Club final.

Appointing Liam Dunne would be a bad start for most teams.

It is a long term project

Antrim haven’t a chance in Cusack park without the Loughiel contingent CL, not a prayer in the world.

What’s the story with the Dublin hurlers’ conditioning? Peter Kelly and Liam Rushe both out injured after one game in the league.

Didn’t Rushe break a bone in his hand? could hardly blame that on conditioning

I was holding my tongue on this, but my main criticism of Daly in Clare was the way he started injured players (Lohan, G Quinn, C Lynch), Peter Kelly had oviously badly done his medial ligament last week and shouldnt have played v Galway, his mobility was awful and he was cleary hampered and in pain.

Liam Rush has been playing non stop now for 24 mths…

No, he’d recovered from the hand injury to play against Galway according to sportsnewsireland. Kelly damaged his medial knee ligaments which makes him the 3rd or 4th frontline player to do so in 12 months. Apparently they’re missing nine regulars for the remainder of the league. That’s not bad luck, they’re definitely doing something wrong.

Could be the legacy of the savage physical training they did last year

When rugby players etc do 5 and 6 day a week training the focus is on rest and recovery as much as the training itself. You’d have to wonder have the GAA coaches been neglecting the rest and recovery aspect?

If only there was a poster here who could give an opinion on this :strokechin:
