National Hurling League Division 1A, 2013

Hennessey has injured his knee again, very doubtful he will be back this year. Bubbles deserved another start i thought. Bonnar is away with work i think.

Pity re Hennessy , looks like his career is in serious jeopardy

Shame about Hennessey. I was talking about the two Mahers at the back though.

Anyway if that is the team O’Shea will pick come championship, then Tipp are going nowhere.

Cork 0-7 Clare 0-4 with 25 minutes gone, both sides have had hit some poor wides

HL1A: Impressive Clare slay Cork

16 March 2013
Clare produced an excellent second half display to defeat Cork by 1-22 to 1-16 at Pairc Ui Rinn tonight.

Cork were left to rue a number of wides through the game, ten of which came in the first half, but Clare scored some excellent scores in the second half and were worthy winners.

Clare opened the scoring from a Colin Ryan free but after two minutes Seamus Harnedy pointed for Cork to level matters. Then Patrick Horgan opened his account for the evening from a free. Horgan converted another free before Conor O’Sullivan made it 0-4 to 0-1 after just five minutes.

The Rebels were off to a flyer and Horgan’s third free of the night put four points between the sides and Clare needed a score badly or either they would be left trailing in Cork’s wake.

The Banner did hit the next two scores to leave just two between the teams. Cork hit back with a point from Lorcan McLoughlin. The sides exchanged scores to leave it 0-6 to 0-4 after 13 minutes.

Horgan made it a three point game with another free and it was his accuracy from placed balls that was keeping Cork in front. Paudie O’Sullivan and Daniel Kearney hit points to make it 0-8 to 0-4, but the home side were also hitting a number of wides to keep Clare in the game.

Tony Kelly hit Clare’s first point from play in the 28th minute, which cancelled out a Cork point just moments earlier. Cork continued to hit wides and this will be a real concern for their manager Jimmy Barry Murphy.

Horgan was on fire from placed balls and he tapped over another to make it 0-10 to 0-5 after 31 minutes of play. Colin Ryan had a wide for Clare as half time loomed. The Banner hit a point through John Conlon, but Cork hit back, before Ryan hit a point when he had a goal at his mercy. O’Sullivan added another Cork score to make it 0-12 to 0-7.

An alarming fact for the Banner in the first half was that they only had two scorers, Ryan and Kelly in that opening period. For Cork; they hit ten wides during the first 35 minutes, which is something of a concern for them.

Ryan had the first score of the second half with a well taken point. Cork restored their five-point lead when Harnedy pointed and this was added to when Horgan hit a free over from just inside the 65 metre line to make it 0-14 to 0-8 after 39 minutes.

The score of the game came when Conor Ryan pointed from some distance after good work by his namesake Colin. This was followed up by a Tony Kelly point to leave the score 0-14 to 0-10 with 41 minutes on the clock.

Clare did well to snuff out a Cork chance when Paudie O’Sullivan went through the middle, but his effort was blocked at the expense of a '65, which Horgan converted. This was becoming a battle between Horgan and Ryan and it was the Clareman next on the score sheet as he knocked over a free to leave the score at 0-15 to 0-11. Conor Ryan was coming more into the game and he fired over another excellent point to make it a three-point game.

Colin Ryan made no mistake from yet another free and now there was just two points between the teams. O’Sullivan was causing havoc in the Clare defence and so too was Conlon at the other end and it was the Clare man that fired over to leave the minimum between the sides with 49 minutes gone.

Kelly levelled matters when he scored his third point of the night, while at the other end McLoughlin hit yet another wide for Cork. With 18 minutes gone in the second half Colin Ryan hit a free over the bar to put Clare in the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game, 0-16 to 0-15.

O’Sullivan bore down on goals, but his effort was well saved by Patrick Kelly, the ball was cleared, but Cork were awarded a free, however, Horgan’s effort drifted wide of the goals. They doubled their lead when Nicky O’Connell pointed from play.

The unerring Ryan made it 0-18 to 0-15 after 57 minutes, but a foul on Conor Lehane was converted by Horgan to reduce the gap to two points. It was back to three when Conlon struck again shortly after as the game entered its final ten minutes.

From 65 metres out the excellent Kelly hit a point on the run that was worth the entrance fee alone to make it 0-20 to 0-16 with nine minutes of normal time remaining. Then the first goal of the came at just the right time for Clare when Shane O’Donnell raced through and fired past Cork goalkeeper Anthony Nash, 1-20 to 0-16.

Darach Honan got in on the act when he fired over a brilliant point with just three minutes remaining. Clare were not finished yet and who else but Colin Ryan hit over a point from play from his own 65 metre line to leave it 1-22 to 0-16.

Luke O’Farrell scored a consolation goal for Cork in the last minute, but it was certainly to be Clare’s evening as their supporters went home the happier.
