@Sidney seems to be constructing an argument on a few flawed bases.
Firstly Venables was not underrated as English manager. He had a talented group of players who were neither spectacularly fortunate or unfortunate and that was reflected in a decent but unspectacular performance in euro 96.
The comparisons with Guus Hiddink are a little off. Hiddink has long since burned his reputation. He’s a reasonable manager for an extraordinary price but he’s not the benchmark. He has also had many finer hours than Euro 96.
Thirdly, Chewy has schooled him on his Leeds performance. There were difficult circumstances but he failed miserably at dealing with them.
