New Ireland manager

Presume someone has touted Philippe Troussier already?
But Trap changed the team hugely since the Euros and introduced half those lads you’ve mentioned above. There isn’t a cohort of players who are hanging on to places at the end of their careers out of blind loyalty. Indeed Trap was criticised for moving on from the likes of Kilbane and Reid when the time came.

Clark has been given a few chances and is, regrettably, shit. Coleman has eben good. McCarthy has been very average - he’s an ok player but he’s not the messiah he was proclaimed to be. Gibson chooses not to play. McGeady always plays when fit. Brady has been given a chance by Trap, but I don’t know why he fell down the pecking order. McClean has had his chances, and despite his rant in Kazakhstan he hasn’t proven himself to be any better than any other options. Long has been elevated to our primary striker and has been dreadful.

It would have been ridiculous to sack Trap, or not renew his contract after the Euros. We lost to Spain, Italy and Croatia after qualifying for our first major tournament in 10 years. Getting rid of him then would have been illogical and indefensible.

I don’t think we have a particularly good team at all.

We have no goalkeeper. We have Coleman to play full back and Wilson as a really limited left back. We’re desperately short on central defenders - badly need SSL to stay fit and we’ll probably have to endure O’Shea as his partner for the time being.

We can’t play Hoolahan and Keane in the same team as far as I’m concerned and there is no earthly way we can drop Robbie yet - we simply don’t have another striker who can shoot straight, with the exception of Stokes who needs to be recalled. If we have Gibson, McCarthy, Meyler, Whelan and Green we do at least have sufficient central midfielders to provide cover for eachother but none are outstanding. Brady and McGeady are good wing optoins with a bit o fepth in that position at least.

Compare that to Austria’s squad or Belgium’s squad, or even Wales’ squad (are they renewing Coleman’s contract - now that’s madness!) and we’re not in a great position at all.
Yeah I can easily agree with much of that too and i’m not saying we are a player or two or a decent manager away from winning the next euros, but belief, confidence, organization, even fight and anything under the umbrella of sports psychology, have gone out the window under Trap. When you don’t have the players, you need this to be as much a part as your arsenal as anything else. I’ve never witnessed an Irish team so afraid of playing at home. I know we are up shit creek and there is no quick fix, and perhaps i’m the eternal optimist, but I believe those lads can do better. The story of Trapps tenure has also largely been about falling out with players or players not playing, that’s disgraceful carry on for the money he was on. Not going to view players playing for clubs too. It all has an effect on the psyche of the squad. The only thing for it at this stage is for Glen Hoddle and Eileen to come in and work their magic.

Ireland for the Irish

I certainly concur that we can do better than we’ve done in this campaign. I think we’ll find it very tough to surpass the achievements of his first 4 years in the job though.

Glenn Hoddle would actually be a superb appointment. Failing that I’d like to see Mr Trapattoni reinstated.

Ricky Sbragia is the man for Eire

@ianharte23: Delighted to hear the news… #Comeonyouboysingreen #trappout

If we’re going to restrict ourselves to a shortlist made up entirely of former Sunderland managers, we could do worse.

Alan Curbishley

Adie Boothroyd

Rene Meulensteen

Sean O Driscoll:clap:

Has Hoddle been mentioned? Hoddle.

Numpties 0n social media were claiming Ferguson was gonna take it

To avoid one of the biggest criticisms of the past regime, it’s important that the next manager can speak English.

Mick McCarthy: “My understanding is that he (Martin O’Neill) has got the job. Good luck to him, I’m delighted.”

Any chance we could entice Mancini?

Dunphy should be forced to take over for the two remaining matches. While we look to replace the greatest manager we’ve ever had
