Next Celtic Manager 2019

I know that’s a few years ago and presumably Dembele was a fairly high earner but even so how in God’s name were Celtic spending that much on wages?

Stephen Kenny

Paul Lambert being linked also

Big Sam Allardyce

I believe a large chunk is on the manager.

Also a lot is performances and related to Champions League qualification.

Plus one would expect to get a premium for living in Glasgow instead of Seville.

It’s still an awful lot of money though.

There’s a more recent graph too for the Europa League knock-out teams here:

Celtic’s problem is that the squad is oversized and the budget is spread maybe too evenly.

Instead of having 22 or so players (with a few key high earners) complemented by youth players, we have over 30 first team squad players. Lots of them would be earning a decent salary but rarely getting on the pitch so that’s immediately a problem - a biggish investment in players we’re getting no return from. Compper signed from Germany is probably the biggest culprit but there’s a few in there.

It’s inefficient budget and squad management.

See all the players below. Green = In on loan. Red = Out on loan.

Rodgers spoke early in his reign about having a tight squad of 20 players plus the keepers, but that hadn’t happened in practice. He takes some of the blame along with Lawwell obviously. Lawwell’s the CEO but operates like a Director of Football.

We’ve got an unbalanced squad with lots of players probably leaving so further upheaval of manager leaving is not ideal.

Come on feel the Moyes.

Proximity to England is a big issue as well I’d say, a good wage in Britain is seen as a lot higher for a footballer than a good wage in Portugal or Spain

Actually is there such word as unbalanced? Should I have used imbalanced? Is that a word?

the squad is way too big, has been for years

think they had 14 strikers between 2012-2016

More quality, less deadwood is what is needed

Ah ffs
Did you even see rovers in 2010 and 2011?
Of course it was “functional” with NI he vastly overachieved with limited players and it is this quality or functionality as you may call it that will be necessary for a club like celtic to qualify for or get out of a CL group …that should be where the bar should be set

Interesting and valid point. Would the Celtic fans on here prefer someone like Rodgers who had them scoring loads of goals and hammering teams most weeks or someone who might not be as flashy domestically but would set the team up better in Europe?

option b for me mate

I met Mr Rodgers before. I don’t think he likes the clergy. I didn’t get a warm feel from the man, He had a cold, cold heart. What he put his wife through and that poor soul who took his own life last year is unforgiveable. Let him darken Leicester now. He should have left for China last summer.

Good riddance, be gone with prayers Mr Rodgers.

God bless you all.

Neil Lennon’s agent is in talks with Lawwell at Lennoxtown.

Just remains to be seen whether it’s an appointment until the end of the season initially or a rolling 1-year deal.

Hopefully he’s in situ for the game at Hearts tomorrow night (where he was attacked by a fan in the past) before the return trip to Edinburgh at the weekend for the cup clash with Hibs (where he left in bitter circumstances recently after being suspended by the club).

Is it time to remove the Brendan emojis?

We kept Ronny but Ronny did his best.

Gordon Strachan, please.

Yes, Ronny was getting grief but stayed until the end of the season to allow for an orderly transition to the new manager.
