Next Celtic Manager

It’s taken me longer than many, & I respect that some are still unsure or downright unsupportive, but I’m pleased to confirm I’m ALL IN on Wilfried Nancy. Let me be clear - I’ve done MY OWN RESEARCH to the extent that devoted conspiracy theorists would be impressed. Let the journey commence.

The main thing Mr. Nancy has going for him is that he’d look fucking great as a Che Guevara-style mural on the side of a building in the Garngad.

Apart from that I’m not convinced.

But maybe that is the point. Maybe the deciding factor in what makes a successful Celtic manager is your ability to envisage them as a Che Guevara style mural on a wall.

I could picture Ange or Martin O’Neill as such a mural. I couldn’t picture Ronny Deila or Lou Macari as such a mural.

But I could also have pictured John Barnes and Tony Mowbray as such murals.

Bielsa would be a great Celtic manager.
John Barnes is as bad a manager as ever worked in the SPL***
*** First division/whatever

Really?

When Barnes was sacked Celtic had taken 41 points from a possible 60. Henrk Larsson had had his legged snapped in two in the October.

The previous season Dr. Jo took 33 points from the first possible 60 points.

In 1997/98 Wim the Tim took 41 points from the first 60, which was identical to Barnes.

In 1996/97 Tommy Burns took 42 points from the first 60.

Yes really. Barnes signings were of historically dreadful proportions other than petrov. Barnes spent big.
He spent 11 million quid back then on a wholly disinterested berkovic and Rafael shite (sic)
That uucoam dalgleish did completely throw him under the bus mind.
MON’s handling of dalgleish was his managerial apex.

You claimed Barnes was as bad a manager as ever worked in the SPL. But the stats don’t back up what you say.

Petrov went on to become one of Celtic’s greatest players of the modern era.

Celtic have signed a hell of a lot of duds since then. The reality is foreign signings are largely dictated by scouting networks and agents.

Even Martin O’Neill barely signed a player of note in his last three years.

Worse again , he gave lads more years on good money than they should have got

Don’t be so silly Sid.

He’ll be Denzel and Scales will be Ethan Hawk

Celtic need to sign Bazunu

Barnes signed Ian Wright and lost to Inverness. He’ll be remembered for the latter by 99% of the public hence a failure

He signed Rafael Scheidt for about six million quid.

I’m going to take a punt and say this lad lived up to his name?

Oh he most certainly did.
Reggie Blinker wasn’t a Barnes signing and I’m well predisposed to him as he lived nearby and once let me out onto Byers road in traffic (black Audi convertible, registration plate was REG 111 iirc)but he was really bad. I was at an OF game at Ibrox and he was cheered onto the pitch when he came on as a sub. By the Huns. Rafael was not far off this level of awfulness, but cost a nawful lot more money. 6 million quid back then was serious player money.

Some talk Brother Wilfried will be announced today, will be in attendance at Easter Road on Sunday & formally assume the role from the great Martin O’Neill as of Monday. O’Neill was openly stating post match last night that he would be stepping aside after Sunday’s game for the new man. It would be terrific, absolutely terrific, if the players could round off O’Neill’s short reign with another win. He’s done a brilliant job of stabilising a messy & toxic situation that had the potential to nosedive further, along with Maloney, Fotheringham & others. As if his legacy needed any further cementing but this has been great, just great.

I get the temptation to stick with O’Neill & there’s always risk with the unknown, but I’m all aboard the Nancy express now. Having done MY OWN research, I’d urge those with misgivings to give him a chance. We also need to take the nuances of the MLS & American sports into account. It’s very difficult for dynasties to be created, less alone maintained, due to things like the salary cap & limits on Designated Players. CF Montreal are apparently the smallest club in the system there & his feats there earned him the move to Columbus Crew. An organization that had some past success alright but far from one of the main players when he took over, & he was able to create a title winning side playing some attractive football.

As his appointment has become increasingly expected, it’s reminded me of the days just before & after Ange took over. There was no need to focus on other names in the ring & various journalists, broadcasters & fan media types devoted the time to doing deep dives on him. And like Ange, it’s the people who’ve been familiar with his work over many years that are almost universally gushing in their praise of him. How he builds a club, commands the respect of everyone, is a leader & a teacher, gets his sides playing on the front foot & brings the support & everyone with him.

I actually think O’Neill is happy to hand over the baton & didn’t necessarily want to continue beyond this 1-2 month period, & I think the club needs to push forward for the future now with a young & ambitious manager. I guess the thing is, again like what happened with Ange, a good managerial appointment can mask the other issues at the club to a certain extent. If Celtic truly want to compete at a decent European level then there’s significant changes needed structurally at the club too.

But for now, I’m excited to get to know the Nancy bhoy.

Nancy could be the new arsene wenger… one thing he’ll bring is serious discipline… the jocks won’t know what hit em!!

MON hasn’t actually made his job any easier. He’s volleyed the new manager bounce into row X, and significantly raised expectations.
That said, he’s lucky the huns are truly awful, and their new manager looks and talks like beale mark 2.
Like @rocko said though, generally managerial appointments have been good, and the notably awful one, the reappointment of Lennon was obvious from way out, and a bizarre misstep.
What this has shown is just how toxic and awful it was under latter day turkey teeth.

Rogers inherited a nice team from Ange and yes history won’t be kind to the way he’s destroyed them

Just ruminating on this some more (& not seeing any announcement yet today) I think there’s some stage management going on by Celtic.

Posters who work in PR/Communications/Strategy/Media (cc @BruidheanChaorthainn, @Horsebox, @Chancer) will be very familiar with this sort of stuff.

Had Celtic got thumped last night then I’d say there’s a strong chance the announcement would have been made today to move the news cycle on.

But there’s a real feel good factor after that terrific display & I reckon they will give the stage to O’Neill on Sunday for a farewell & to see if we can bring that good feeling into a hard away game.

There will be no press conference today to preview the weekend game afaik. When there’s a Thursday night game then the end of the press conference afterwards is devoted to a token question or two about the weekend match/opponents with quotes embargoed until the Friday night.

So I’m now predicting Nancy to be announced at 10am on Monday morning. I still think he might be watching from the stand at Easter Road on Sunday though. My second prediction is the Sky Sports cameras zooming in on him around 4 minutes into the game, with Ian Crocker in his inimitable style exclaiming…and what have we got here then?! Well behind the scarf & under that hat it looks like Celtic manager elect Wilfried Nancy is here to see his bhoys!

Scrub that. O’Neill & Scales have been doing media at Lennoxtown so there was a press conference today. But sticking to my Monday 10am aNANCYment prediction.
