I am quiet calm. The season is early yet. Letâs see how both teams get on. Next week will give us a better indication of where Wexford are.
Youâre dead right with the bit about Kirwan. At least 5 times we were fouled in defence which allowed Limerick to score.
I forgot about Jack Guiney. He could be a decent option too in due course.
Good report @Bandage. Incidentally I turned around to my father at half time and predicted a Wexford win. 6 points was never going to be enough playing against that wind.
I must say I though our full and half back lines had a relatively good day. I was quite impressed with Hannon tbh. I thought he did ok.
If you wanted to take anything positive from a Limerick perspective, I did see some type of a game plan and genuinely got the feeling they were trying to hurl intelligently. The problem was partitularlying in the first half was giving that extra pass when a score or at least an attempt at a score was the easier option. Hurling with a strong breeze and trying to play posession hurling was just daft tbh and this was ultimately whathe cost the game.
Wexford for the middle part of the second half used the wind very well and hurled way more intelligently then Limerick.
Limerick really lack a tall target in the inside line. The starting full forward line were way too small today and bar trying to work the ball in they were never going to win any high ball bar getting lucky.
This is where the likes of Downes and Dowling are missed. There was never even a threat to the Wexford goal in the first half and given the wind that was there, that is just not acceptable.
A lot of complaints about the referee. Yes he was shit and probably gave Wexford a bit more then Limerick. The penalty incident happened too far away from me so I canât make a call on it.
But there were also some blatant frees that should have went Wexford way that didnât.
While we should come through Kerry, Laois and Offaly relatively unscathed, Iâm afraid the firepower is just not there to take on Galway. Or at least the forward lines that started and finished today donât have the firepower.
My guess is that Galway wIâll beat Wexford leaving Limerick knowing exactly what will be needed. But knowing whatâs needed and actually doing it are two completely different animals.
1b will be our faith for at least another season and yes there are some encouraging signs but until we can get some height into our full forward line, Iâm afraid the goals are not going to come.
I thought Hannon was excellent myself. Thereâs a touch of robbing Peter to pay Paul about Wexfordâs set up. It gives us a bit more security at the back but it left Hannon to have a fairly free role and he hurled very well. I was between the 21 and 45 at the Clonard End so didnât get a good view of the penalty appeal up at the other end. But @Appendage and @stevie_G thought it should have been a penalty. I think thatâs the main decision Limerick can have valid gripes over. Aside from that, both teams could point to multiple unfavourable decisions from Kirwan.
Its encouraging to hear Hannon going well at 6âŚweâve 5 or 6 players who werent involved today who youâd imagine will come back into contention before June
Richie English, Gavin, Condon, Dowling, Downes and fingers crossed Barry Nash.
V dissapointing to lose today but we had 5 league debutants starting and judging by the radio they did ok.
Peter and Mike Casey in particular stood outâŚit also sounded like Hickey did fairly well on Lee Chin.
This is why we love limerick. From depths of defeat the optimism returns before long
Like I said there were indications that there is an intelligent plan in place and tbf they tried there best to keep it going. But the lack of a target man up front and the persistent passing to a teamate when it was easier to try for a score cost them today.
But yeah I would say there are encouraging signs there.
It can never get any worse for us chief. The only way is up
Itâs all we know!
Incidentally @Bandage There was a savage crowd in the Whitford hotel but despite this the efficiency, standard of food and value for money were top notchâ:+1:
Dowling will take the FF position when he returns.Did Jim-Bob pick up a knock? Wexford really seemed to dominate once him and Browne came off.Did Seamus Hickey stay vertical today?
He must have cos I thought he was motoring well. Some engine on him.
This was my first outing this year and tbh probably had his best 70 since the Tipp match in 2014.( Hickey that is)
Had a little stumble early in the first half and I thought fuck here we go. But no he sobered up fairly well
Itâs quite good for what it is alright. My auld pair arenât far from it and itâs a handy place to go for some grub (cc @Appendage) and a quiet pint if you donât fancy going down town.
Think Jimbob simply ran out of steam. Probably the end result of Kiely letting him skip the winter training slog.
You know you are beat when you are bringing on John Shitgibbon for him!
Think you mean John Snitchgibbon?
Touche!
Incidentally can any Limerick poster tell me what Cian Lynch 'so role is supposed to be. He started in at full forward but won nothing. Started to roam out the field in the second half but was largely ineffective.
Until Lk get Lynch getting on ball at pace going forward we wonât see the best of him in a green jersey . He is now getting on ball with back to goal and in a clustered area .
