Niall Breslin - Carrying the hopes of a nation

I don’t think I asked that question.
I have no doubt that women are affected far more, it’s their body after all.
But I also think that men can be severely traumatised.
I’d say women are far better to talk about their feelings and have greater access to support.
In short, I don’t think that it is taboo to write about it, perhaps Bressie is the wrong person but it’s his current experience.
I don’t think he has any children so it may hit harder

I know nothing stays the same, but if you’re willing to play the game, it’s coming around again…

Yerra, lads riled up over Bressie, saying he is ā€œstealing a livingā€. No different than these lads charging for their opinions on GAA podcasts and making a living off that. In the lead up to the Eng Ire rugby game, it was all doom and gloom on Off The Ball, and then Ire go and thrash the English.
There are probably a lot of roasters who don’t like Bressie because he possibly swooped in to charm some lass they were trying to chat up in some random midlands pub years ago…

I didnt realise those lads were talking about miscarriages, suicide and mental health on those podcasts. I must be listening to the wrong, or right ones.

Well, they are so called ā€œexpertsā€ but can be wildly wrong manys the time. I have no interest in Bressie, so don’t read his articles or listen to him. Very easy to do.

I thought it was hilarious circa 2015 when Bressie released a song with the lyrics ā€œWhy would I at 35, drop down the anchorā€. It felt like a pointed dig at Roz at the time as Bressie was mid-30’s and probably feeling pressure to settle down around the time of their break-up. Roz was 10 years his junior if I remember correctly. One of many off the production line of good looking Tipp women.

Sure there’s lads on here paying money to listen to Ken Early.

Of course it is. Buts its not the same thing by any matter of means.

Both things can be true. He is obviously a shameless grifter but people being more comfortable with discussing mental health issues is a good thing as well.

The thing about his like is that they are a way to rapidly popularise trends and make them mainstream. That’s not going to be driven by academics or actual experts.

So even if it’s superficial or blatantly fraudulent, there’s an argument that it’s a necessary evil for social change.

I have a theory that technology AND changing work patterns have eaten into the space lads like Bressie, Hussey et al were occupying. So they need to keep pivoting.

My social media algorithm is persistently directing me to all these apps to promote mindfulness & combat anxiety etc etc. Yokes like Liven, Sounds True & so on. ā€œAt 40 he was leading a team, by 43 he was completely burnt out…what did he do next? Download the Liven appā€¦ā€ It’s taking out the middle man so to type, but it’s a sad indictment that I’m not getting directed to pictures of diddies.

And I think these technological advancements along with the post pandemic wfh dynamic has seriously reduced these ā€œin officeā€ events where the lads came in for a couple of hours & went off with €5k-€10k minimum. There’s the odd webinar but they don’t seem to have the same traction at all.

I recall raising my head above the PARROT PIT around the time we were coming out of the financial crash around 2012/13. My then employer was maintaining a salary freeze but encouraging everyone to ā€œBe At Your Bestā€ by rolling out various wellbeing initiatives. I said I would benefit more from a pay rise & it would do more for my mental health than listening to quarterly talks by the usual suspects, & them getting the money instead. The point was taken but not well received.

the question - is breslin by direct or circuitous nature being funded by SSRI manufacturers / marketers ?

Many pushing mental health issues in mainstream media are funded by pharma companies or their beneficiaries

That’s my point.

thats good

how in the fuck has Irish society codded themselves that mental health issues were ever taboo or not discussed?

Hi Niall

Poor old Peig had a tough run,
It would have broken lesser women

And she made sure we all paid for it.

Yes. Isn’t it ironic that it’s awkward squad disciples of snakeoil salesman Jordan Peterson like @Kyle who appear to have the biggest problem with snakeoil salesman Bressie?

Two cheeks of the same grifting arse

Unpopular opinion alert
I did my leaving cert honours Irish as a 35 year old and I studied Peig as I half remembered it

It’s a good book, wasted on the youth
