Nóirín O'Sullivan - Former Garda Commissioner

how are the relative organisations structured mate

You’d want that to police them Irish fuckers, they’re mad the lot of them.

And you want to halve it to €90k which is probably less than a long serving Superintendent makes after a bit of overtime?
I can see how that’ll really attract top quality talent.

Her and her mentor Callanan are probably meeting this morning for coffee to discuss life as pensioners.

So what’s your excuse for such docile posts?

Nah. That was never going to be realistic in fairness. The point I was trying to make is that 180k a year is plenty for the gig and I can’t see the need to raise it just to bring in someone from the outside.

As of 2014 the Police Commissioner of New Yorks salary is $205,180. Running that through my currency converter and it works out at €170,663.34.

What you aren’t factoring in is profile. The NY police commissioner is a seriously high profile gig, when you retire from that you can go on to make serious bread in private security/consulting etc. or use it as a springboard to elected office.
It’s like the president of the US makes fuck all, but he can go around the World charging whatever he wants for speaking gigs upon retirement.

I suppose you’ve done a fairly good survey on what people are paid for the job in comparable sized police services around the world and then adjusted to take into the account the lopsided structure of the garda síochána and the amount of reform that has to be undertaken and then factored in how many candidates would have the relevant inexperience policing and in reform of a large public body?

Get someone in who can do the job. If it takes an extra 50-100k then pay it.

Also take home pay for the equivalent amount in the US would be a way higher, than in Ireland. Our effective tax rate is over 50%, theirs is about 35%.

Maturity, clarity & being a top guy.

The wage structure for the Gardaí all rotates around the pension. Very low salary for the job at every level but the trade off is a full pension in 30 years. It’s not fit for purpose at all.

Yep, I knew you were on drugs.

I may have mentioned this before but they should throw every penny they have at it and get Commissioner Reagan in. Straight as a die and but strong willed and takes no shit.

Fair enough and I also take your point regarding taxation. Ultimately I would imagine, you can pay them what you want but if theyre not given the power to have a massive clean out particularly at senior management level, then it doesn’t matter how much you pat them. Plus ca change and all that.
Either way it’s a tricky one for FG as this is now the second commissioner in 6 years and it’s another headache for Leo

Commissioner Gordon seemed like a decent fella. And if he couldn’t sort something he knew a man who could.

Calm down man

The right person for the job wouldn’t take it unless they were given the powers to reform.

Fuck off, it’s Monday morning, I’m entitled to be cranky.
