Non Matchday Celtic Discussion 2013/14

Tony Watt scored on his debut for Lierse at the weekend, coming off the bench. Interesting comments from the Lierse manager though who said he was unfit and out of shape which tallies with rumours that had been circulating about his professionalism.

Tony has an interview in the Daily Mail together where he doesn’t seem terribly comfortable with the fame that came when he scored that goal against Barcelona. That’s all well and good but it doesn’t really excuse not trying hard in training. Hope he knuckles down and works hard to get back to the required levels - talented player but he’s not good enough that he can ignore basic fitness.

Why did you start a non matchday discussion on a matchday?

I should clarify: discussions should not be specific matchday related but can take place any day, or indeed any night.

Georgios Samaras can sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in 12 weeks times. It’s absolutely imperative that Celtic secure him on a long-term contract. We should be rewarding his commitment and majestic displays rather than trying to use his happiness at the club as a way of skimping on the terms offered to him.

Agreed, Celtic must learn from the example of how Leinster and Irish Rugby lost Jonny.

What the fuck is Lawwell at?

We left the likes of Hooper, Wanyama and Wilson come near the end of their contracts last season - (Wanyama had two years left but we should have made him sign a longer contract last season). We also let Brown into the last six months before we renewed it.

This season we have Stokes, Ledley and Samaras (possibly others) who can sign a pre-contract in a couple of months time. This is amateurish.

We continually offered Wanyama an improved and extended deal and he continued to reject it. Agree with the point in general though.

Efe Ambrose signed a new 4-year deal with Celtic today. He’s started the season well and seems to be forging quite a decent partnership with Van Dijk.

Neil Lennon mentioned the Samaras contract situation in his press conference today. He said the club would be meeting with the player and his agent again very soon.

Agree that we should be more proactive in securing our key players on long term contracts. It protects their selling value and that’s important given we’re now operating a buy-develop-sell at a profit-reinvest strategy.

Bad news. Celtic have just confirmed that Adam Matthews will have shoulder surgery on Wednesday and will be out for 10-12 weeks.

Anthony Stokes spoke to a couple of Sunday papers and said there hasn’t been any real progress in agreeing a new contract and that he’ll soon be forced to assess other options.

don’t worry pal…you should be able to stave off the competition because I doubt Stokes wants to return to Dublin…

I think Stokes would be a great signing for Roma.

Bhoys, what did you make of Virgil Van Dijk at the weekend? Very, very, very good. He’s really settled now and is coming into his own. I think he’ll go on to have an excellent career.

Hard to believe that Martins Indi charlatan was in the Dutch u21 squad ahead of Van Dijk.

Catalan newspapers Mundo Deportivo and Sport are reporting that Barcelona are set to offer a contract to the magnificent Georgios Samaras.

Does Ambrose’s agent have some serious dirt on Lawell and Lennon?
How the fuck did he pull off a 4 year deal?

What an agent that man has

?

+1

Getting the interest of the Qataris just as his contract is up for discussion, a genius. Also if he could get Samaras there he deserves every percentage of his cut.

Neil Lennon’s press conference earlier:

  • Ledley and Rogic are returning to training tomorrow.
  • Boerrigter is out of the Ajax match with an ankle injury.
  • Lustig’s hip problem flared up in one of the Swedish games. He’ll sit out the Hibs game but he should be available for Ajax.
  • No other injury concerns arising from the internationals.
  • Forrest is fit again.
  • Lennon was at France-Finland the other night to scout Finnish targets.
