Ah thatâs a disappointing enough selection in fairness. OâBrien not in the squad, Wallace dropped despite his performances in New Zealand, Mick OâDriscoll starting in the second row.
KIDNEY OUT
Micko? Wallace? Get ta fuck. The South African forwards will run all over us.
Out of interest, when was the last time John Hayes and Marcus Horan didnât make the 22?
Who was Kidney going to pick if Leo want fit? As for Wallace I could take or leave the SOB decision for now. Would the more technical rugby minds (Bandage, Rocko, Lar, Puke, Mac, The Runt etc, other know it all cunts pfo) give me their opinions on the feasability of moving someone like Ferris to the second row perhaps?
While Iâm not saying it would be entirely unfeasible to move Ferris 2nd row I think you would have to consider the overall dynamic of the team and whether or not it would impact on our ability to win ball at the breakdown.
Not too pleased with the team selectionâŚTrimble and OâBrien can feel hard done byâŚKnew he would go with DâArcy over WallaceâŚWould have loved tp have seen the likes of Ryan and OâBrien start but he has gone for the tried and trusted which is fair enough, but if they donât perform I hope he gives the younger/inexperienced lads their chances against the All Blacks/Argentina
I get the feeling Kidney doesnt have room to experiment, these are vital games for the IRFU, ones that are of huge importance to the coffers, even moreso given the launch of the new Lansdowne and the ticketing issues of late.
Cheers for that input Runt, I would fear he may not have the natural game for it and of course it would be foolish to ignore the impact his loss would leave at the breakdown. Just felt it worthy of some debate among the leading rugby minds of the board.
He does too much positive destructive work from the back row to move him I think. Iâm sure heâd be capable of playing at lock but you really want him hitting rucks early and making big openfield tackles and carrying loose ball. If you take that out of his game I think youâd be losing too much to justify the switch.
Paddy Wallace should be starting ahead of DâArcy but regarding MOD we arenât exactly stacked with options at lock.
A bitterweet 37th birthday for the Bull today btw.
These up coming games will be won and lost at the ruck.
Iâm a Kidney fan but if that selection is slightly baffling. People might accuse me of being parochial but our two standout players in the tour were Wallace and Trimble and yet neither feature. All very well saying we will be facing a physical team in the Boks but we also have to look at the fact that we created so much more with Wallace on the park than Darcy it was untrue. Omission of Trimble is even more bemusing. There is a million miles between standard of H Cup and that we face on Saturday yet Kindey seems to put more credence into club rugby compared with how lads have done for Ireland over past 12 months. In short too many players rewarded for shocking tours while those that did perform our sidelined.
Just thinking about this again, this game is a glorified practice match and Kidney picks this shite team. What is it about Irish rugby managers not having any adventure. Whatever about making money, these games should be designed to test new players against world class opposition. Instead, our âmessiahâ is churning out the likes of Micko and David Wallace who are not going to offer anything new to the team.
Heâll likely give OâBrien, Cronin and Toner a run against Samoa and then not start them against the All Blacks due to their âlack of international experienceâ or some other bullshit excuse before giving them a token 20 minute run out against Argentina which wonât matter a shite to anyone cos most people will be sick of rugby by the end of November having seen us beaten by South Africa and hammered by New Zealand.
Anyone suggesting putting Ferris in at Lock is out of their mind. This is International rugby, you donât just move pivitol positions like that. He certainly could do it in time, but it would take a change in body shape and alot of adjusting. Ireland donât need to do that.
Micko has been the form lock of those available, simple as. Hines for me has been the best lock in Ireland, but of course heâs Scottish.
I donât think Wally is in better form than SOâB, so i think thats a poor call, i think he is more suited to the new laws as well. Not sure how Rory Best has earned his place either.
Backs look excellent, except i donât rate Reddan ahead of Boss or Stringer, but SA are down their 2 best S-Hâs, so that will save us somewhat.
Think they are mad taking the trip they are, up here only 2 days before the game. pure madness. Ireland -6 @ 15/8 doesnât look too bad.
Isaac Boss is still around - he was utterly shit about five years ago. Find it hard to believe he has improved much. Looks like itâs a harder job to get off the rugby squad than get on it. Canât see too many of these realizing their dream of playing with the British Lions in future. How many of these would hold their own in a competitive game against a decent side? Heaslip, Bowe, Ferris, Fitzgerald. Drico probably though he didnât try a leg down here a few months back.

I know you donât always see eye-to-eye with MBB but I think in fairness he wasnât suggesting that Ferris be played at second row in this game. More a question of whether he could be moved there in time. I reckon he could but it would be wasting his most obvious talents.
Is Hines properly Scottish or is it just residency? By proper, I mean ancestral etc.
Mac I honestly believe Kidneys hands are tied by the IRFU when it comes to these sort of games, and especially this series. As Bandage has been telling us the rugby bubble is in danger of bursting and they believe that wins in this series are paramount to keep momentum going, esp with the effects of the recession on corporate sponsorship and a need to fill their new stadium.
Its frustrating as fuck from a supporters pov though as the same happened with Eddie, it seemed there was never an acceptable time to throw in a load of youngsters to blood them. The last time we saw it in Irisg rugby was in 2000 when Gatland was backed into such a corner he had to toss them all in. You just dont witness that sort of thing in Irish rugby.
But why suggest it at all. Because there is a percieved weakness in MOâD there. Long term it could happen, but what would be the point.
Iâm sure over time and with the correct training Brian Oâ Driscoll or DâArcy would have been fine scrum halves. You are generally changed in position because you might not make it at the highest (or higher) level inj your preferred or regular position, but could somewhere else, ala John Hayes, Timmy Ryan, Micko etc. Ferris is one of the best players in his position in the NH, it would make no sense. Now Donnacha Ryan (as i think you may have suggested) could be making the move for the reasons i outlined above, even if i think he is a very good back rower.
It really didnât matter at all who suggested it. For instance i totally agree with mbb on the Kidney/IRFU thing. Its very frustrating though, and i think the IRFU are mis-reading the supporters if they donât think they would allow for a bit of experiment for the overall improvement in our WC performances.
I was rising about Hines, donât know his exact qualifications, but heâs as Scotish as i am iâd imagine, not at all.
Ah it was just worth debating thatâs all. I think NZ spend an awful lot more time moving players around positions as youngsters to convert back rows to wingers etc. and to find hookers from smaller back row players. I donât think Ferris is suitable for the second row as Iâve said because it would blunt the areas where he is most effective. Strongly believe itâs Ryanâs only chance though.

South Africa have named a new-look XV for Saturdayâs Autumn international against Ireland at the Aviva Stadium.
Despite being decimated by injuries leading up to the match, the world champions are still able to name a strong starting XV.
Deon Stegmann will make his Test debut, while uncapped Sharks utility back Patrick Lambie could also make his debut if Jean de Villiers fails a late fitness test.
The team shows eight changes from the side which ended the Tri-Nations against Australia in September.
Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn, Pierre Spies, Juan Smith, Victor Matfield and Jannie du Plessis will all start.
Coach Peter de Villiers said: 'Itâs a new-look side but with 13 season-ending injuries it couldnât be anything else. But weâre looking on the positive side and this is a great opportunity to test some new players in the toughest conditions.
âWe also have a number of senior players returning to the team after long lay-offs for one reason or another and they are keen to re-stake their claim to a starting place. Weâve not had much time to bed this new team together but the players have worked hard all week to be as well prepared as we possibly can be.â
Reflecting on Stegmannâs selection, the coach said: 'Deon is an open-side in the traditional style and has been outstanding for his province.
âHe is used to playing with Pierre (Spies) and we need an out and out specialist to counter Ireland at the breakdown.â
But the big talking point is certainly at centre.
If former Munster midfielder de Villiers does fail his fitness test, it means full-back Zane Kirchner, who only has 10 caps to his name, could play alongside Lambie in one of the most untried pairing in recent Springbok memory.
The coach, however, has confidence in his selections. He added: 'Our hand has been forced in our centre selection.
âHopefully Jean will recover in time but if not, Patrick Lambie has played at inside centre for the Sharks before he was moved to 10 and Zane is defensively strong and a strong ball runner.â
Regular skipper John Smit, Andries Bekker, Fourie du Preez, Butch James, Heinrich Brussow, Gurthro Steekamp and BJ Botha were all ruled out some time ago, while the last two weeks have accounted for Jaque Fourie, Wynand Olivier, JP Pietersen, Ricky Januarie, Juan de Jongh and Schalk Burger.
Matfield will captain the side in the absence of Smit.
South Africa XV to play Ireland in the Autumn international at the Aviva Stadium on Saturdayat 5.30pm:
(15-1) Gio Aplon; Bjorn Basson, Zane Kirchner, Jean de Villiers/Patrick Lambie, Bryan Habana; Morne Steyn, Ruan Pienaar; Pierre Spies, Juan Smith, Deon Stegmann; Victor Matfield (capt), Bakkies Botha; Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira
Replacements: Chiliboy Ralepelle, CJ van der Linde, Flip van der Merwe, Willem Alberts/Keegan Daniel, Francois Hougaard, Adi Jacobs, Patrick Lambie/Lwazi Mvovo
