Does a lot of this stem from the move to make the nursing course academic as well as clinical and then these are placements alongside that academic course that are part of the curriculum to teach clinical skills
Pre Covid the student nurses could work in paid support roles
I would agree that they should be paid and paid more than that ā¬100 but wouldnāt agree with them getting minimum wage. The same as the dole or thereabouts would be fair I think. It is still college.
I believe the NHS do this in England. No student fees but they are unpaid for placement. Considering its about Ā£9k per year in fees in England its fair. I know a lot of nurses who went to England to train
The big difference is covid. They are facing a risk they didnāt sign up for as part of their college course. If they live with their parents or anyone vulnerable that places huge strain on them. I think I also heard they were told they couldnāt do part time jobs elsewhere if they had them to reduce risk of infection and bringing it into the hospital, that could place a lot of pressure on people relying on that work.
Itās funny the penny pinching they do about figures which are basically nothing in the grand scheme of things while being happy to spend millions or billions on other things
Yeah thatās the issue from what I understand. Working in COVID wards mean they canāt get part time work etc like regular students (anyway everywhere they could get work is closed).
Iām not huge on paying students but we need to do something to help fix the shambles that is our health service so, if this helps, then why not?
My understanding is that student nurses and doctors do necessary work and the system wouldnāt manage without them. If theyāre doing work they should be paid. Itās different to student teachers I think, the system doesnāt need them, itās doing them a favour by giving them a placement.
