As posted at the time, NZ decided during Covid to prioritise wealthy migrants as they looked to become a “haven”.
Not having $10 a day tourists is an extension of this because in the case of the next pandemic, they don’t want to be left then stranded there again and neither government help.

Theory is it normalised pub level drinking at home, and when the pubs reopened, the people stayed drinking at home as well as going back out to the pub.
