Off the Ball on Newstalk

Yes they bring a packed lunch to training and a piece of fruit. They aren’t allowed sweeties though. Well Brick and Moran are, but only if they brush their teeth afterwards.

Waterford 2015 = Donegal 2011

A work in progress and will look to perfect their system for next year.

They did, Dunford played up top for at least 10 mins after half time.

I would argue Plan A was working, it’s just KK are better hurlers overall as of now. Bar the mix up for the goal they were going quite well. Don’t underestimate the influence that goal had on the entire game.
They just need to evolve plan a now.

People are forgetting WD had an 18 year old in the forward line.

The other thing is this role of “underdogs”. Have been reading a lot on it and working with a sports psychologist on it as well as doing a short term course. It’s more damaging than I ever realised. Putting yourself under the “underdog” title is more or less doom in yourself to failure from the get-go. And considering it’s such an Irish thing to enjoy being underdogs it makes you wonder what we have left behind
WD played like underdogs the other day.

What that’s in reference to is off-season where Waterford trained with no expenses or food or anything. It was in the ban and the county board were initially unaware of the training or at least some of them were. It wasn’t approved training.

McGrath threw it out there yesterday in saying he’d need assurances that this year that training would be covered. He was using his new standing and the media to get what he wanted for the team.

Just listened to the football segment there on the podcast and they had Brain Mcguigan on to defend Tyrone. First thing he says is that he doesn’t know where this reputation that Tyrone have has come from. He said that Logan and Canavan couldn’t believe that there was sledging and play acting going in the under 21 and that Mickey Harte doesn’t condone this sort of thing. What a load of bollox, they know what is happening and they could stop it and if they cant then you have to ask are they in control of things. If Harte is trying to stop this from happening and the players just ignoring him?

the effect of the Kilkenny jersey in Croke Park cannot be underestimated with Cody on the sideline. It definitively has a resonance and an influence because of the recent history. Teams are often beaten before they go out or are waiting for the inevitable. I thought Tipp in drawn game last year were a score or two away from hammering Kilkennny but lacked belief and maybe a bit of luck

i am very uncertain with systems like this being played in hurling. Tipperary gave them the answer tot he system when they pushed the extra man up on TDB this denied Waterford the ability to build from the back as they had been doing to great effect this year.

The system was working perfectly against KK only for a few key moments where the players made poor decision, the most prominent of these being the 2 men going for a ball and leaving TJ Reid n for the goal.

I would agree with @thedancingbaby waterford will improve next year, some players will be stronger, but the key in my opinion will be to develop another threatening forward as there is far to much scoring responsibility placed on Maurice. Dunford needs to be more economical, Bennett seems like a fine player and did well for a lad of 18.

That’s because there wasn’t, mud is consistently thrown at Tyrone without any tangible proof whatsoever. Kerry on the other hand:

O’Mahony diving and doping
Donaghy’s consistent goading and getting involved in incidents
Galvin’s attack on a referee and numerous violent incidents down through the years
Tadhg Kennelly’s premeditated assault in an All Ireland final
Stephen O’Brien coming on in an Munster final and rugby tackling everyone

And that’s tip of the iceberg stuff

Attack is a little strong.

I could imagine the hysteria if it was Ricey or Conor Gormley who did it.

how long before we will have players being mic’d up and wearing go pros if this type of shite continues with the diving and so called “sledging”

I am at a loss how sledging is now such an issue, Ryan McMenamin was one of the greatest sledgers of all time in my opinion and nothing was siad about it, lads got on with and played the game.
Tyrone have simply adopted a win at all costs approach to the game and what are they doing? winning.

There was enough hysteria for that stupid incident.

Sure didn’t Tyrone start all this when Phillip Jordan dived to get Marsden sent off in 2003?

No. That wasn’t a dive.

What about Canavan and Mike McCarthy?

A random observation. Kilkenny, already in an advantageous position from essentially doing things reasonably well since the dawn of time, stole a march on all of their rivals in the mid 90s by moving that to an even higher level. It was a decade or so before Tipperary and Galway even copped what was going on, fuckacting around complaining about them not playing football and Kilkenny’s friends in the media and head high tackling and the rest of it. Cork, if they could even have bothered to acknowledge that someone else was capable of getting things right, essentially were a further decade behind, so busy were they settling vendettas between the various vested interests.
The net result of where Kilkenny are now in terms of their development of players is that they are so far ahead of the game numbers wise, that they can afford to hold players back until their mid 20s before pitching them into big games at the business end of a championship (a massive advantage) and that the players are conditioned to wait around for their turn. There is no huge level of unrest either about this that you can discern from the outside. Cody laid down a marker good and early, he let the likes of Charlie Carter and Denis Byrne go. He got rid of Stephen Grehan for playing soccer. There must be a huge number of players in Kilkenny of reasonable standard who would be capable of playing inter county elsewhere but there is no hint of a transfer trade in these players.

Kerry players themselves have said how they just laughed at Ricey, he’s even said it himself his sledging was Mickey Mouse shit really, and I think TOS backed this up in an article recently. However it’s the systematic stuff that’s come on line since then is the issue. The referencing dead relatives and the process of getting family and loved ones names that just is mental shit entirely.
