Official 2012 All Ireland Hurling Championship Thread

Was home at the weekend and read an interview with Ger Loughnane in the Star from back in February. He slated Tipperary in it specifically highlighting their midfield and half forwards as a weak spot. Even had a go at Conor O’Mahony saying Padraig Maher should be centre back. He put Sheedy down as the reason for the 2010 success.

All in all i felt he was a bit harsh in slating the Tipp personnel the way he did but Tipp seem to have a lot of weaknesses and im not sure if they can actually beat Kilkenny again with the current side. Im still of the view that Dublin can on a day. It would all have to go right for them but on their day they could topple Kilkenny. Galway / Cork would be closest after that but outside of maybe beating them in a league game i cant see either challenging the Cats on a championship Sunday.

I backed Dublin for the All-Ireland a while ago. Legitimate question marks over them but I think they’ve very much undervalued at the moment because of the league campaign they had. Very strong side on paper, just a matter of how much they click.

He’s going into a camp for young talent in Rockwell for 6 or 8 weeks AFAIK. a mile away from “pro” rugby, but certainly a move to force his hand. He would be unlikely to even have an academy place next season with Munster.

If there is more to it than I know I’d be interested to hear it

Point is he’ll miss this summer with Cork and his first preference is with rugby…which is not to say his second preference isn’t badminton, or hockey, or whatever other sport he excels at. So I think its fair to assume he is lost to Cork Hurling.

Ya, Dalys focus has been completely on the Kilkenny match since the draw was made.and it was to the detriment of their league performances, although they weren’t too far off the mark in most of them games either. They’ll be a different animal come the Kilkenny game, and I reckon they could take the physicality levels to heights we have never seen before. I’m really looking forward to it…It could be the game of the year, and they could well meet again in the All Ireland Final. Cody is a wily old hoor though, he knows full well what the Dubs will be bringing and will prepare accordingly. He has a high regard for this Dublin team, so much so that he fully expected them to beat Tipp in the All Ireland Semi Final last year.

Dublin and ourselves should be a cracker. I’ve a sneaking suspicion that Dublin will turn us over. Drumcree (© expired) Daly will have them wound up to the hilt for it.

I was at the Kilkenny/Dublin league game and if the championship game is going to be anything like that it will be a cracker. Just on Dublin, I think they weren’t too far off in the league and were on the wrong side of a couple of one point defeats but with the 3 injured now back and a match under their belts I think we might be in with a shout. In saying that Kilkenny are a different animal in the championship than they are in the league. I would still fancy Dublin to be able to beat Cork, Galway and Tipp if they come up against them during the summer.

Cant wait for this game with Kilkenny.

Ken McGrath giving out about ticket prices int he Examiner today. Can understand how it’s tough with kids alright and you’d think family tickets should be pushed to help ease that burden. In general though, I don’t know if €30 is that unreasonable in this day and age. Surely people realise how much other sports charge for their events? You’re only talking about 3 or 4 big games for the majority of teams anyway, less in many cases. It’s not extortion.

I haven’t read this yet but I bet he said the prices were “crazy”. Everything that’s wrong is “crazy” with Ken.

They won 11 points to 1 with time almost up ! Are Tipp only turning up for the closing stages of games these days judging by the Limerick performance too.

€50 for a Wexford fan to see both of their teams at the weekend and there’s the U21 tonight in Tullamore and the replay in Tullamore next weekend (€25 with a ‘special discount replay price’ of €10 for the terrace).

Jokeshop.

It is not extortion but why can’t the GAA come up with some sort of better discounted ticketing scheme. I read somewhere before that Michael O’Leary would have filled Semple Stadium for the Limerick v Tipp game.

Certainly “early-bird” tickets would be a good idea. €5 tickets for a terrace or €15 for a stand ticket if you buy 2 weeks in advance or something.

How would you go about determining a fair price? If you look at what fans around the rest of Europe pay to follow their teams, the GAA prices aren’t excessive. Even in this country, it’s still a good bit cheaper to go and watch inter-county championship games than go to a heineken cup game I suspect.

I think people miss the point when they start comparing prices to other sports. The GAA should be concentrating on what they need to do to fill the stadiums with the potential market out there for GAA and forget about comparing prices with other sports.

In fairness to the FAI - they have shown a good example of this in recent years with the FAI cup finals and the pricing for friendlies. making tickets prices extremely cheap for kids and families is an excellent idea. I know people in work who have bought family tickets for Ireland friendlies when they are not even that big into football. Their reasoning was that it was a family day-out that the kids would enjoy at a decent cost.

Actually, come to think of it. The marketing for the Dublin league series last year was good and cheap. The GAA should carry out similar schemes for the championship and advertise the hell out of it.

Agreed with that but, seeing as the GAA is an amateur association, it’s a bit excessive to ask fans to pay out the bones of €100 over eight days. More so when they could simply have opted to stage the original Wexford v Longford game in Tullamore as a double header with the hurling game. There was no need to stage Dublin v Louth in Croke Park, it could have been held in Navan or Parnell.

I don’t see what the GAA being amatuer had to do with it - it still costs a shed load of money to run it and I’d rather pay money into match than buy a raffle ticket.

Agreed on the fixtures last weekend. Insane that Dublin and Wexford were fixed for Tullamore on Saturday and then Sunday in Croke Park.

Surely the Duds could have played both games in Croker on Sunday and Wexico could’ve have had both games in Tullamore.

I belive that this is Dalys last shot at winning a Leinster Championship and All Ireland with this Dublin team. Its the same old line every year but It all hinges on their backs ability to stop KK from scoring goals, if they manage to do this they have a real chance.

They might beat KK once but I cant see them doing it twice in one year. Cody has at his disposal a panel of players who can reinvent their game plan mid season and if they fall short this month against Dublin it wont happen again this year.

Dublin haven’t taken a champinship scalp of note under Daly?
I dont see it…where does the 6-7 point improvement come from?

no offense KP, but i am not counting Galway under mcintyre

The rejuvenated waistlines of Tannian and Canning tells you all you need to know about McIntryres tenure.

I can see Dublin winning physical battles and having a large amount of possession… but your right Kid getting that advantage to have an effect on the scoreboard is another days work. Saying that, would anyone have belived that Clare would have won the AI in 1995 with the set of forwards they had?

Can KK be limited to scoring 0-15 for example? If they can then Dublin could beat them… My point was that you wont do that to KK twice in one year.

There is no way KK will be limited to 0-15…the '95 thing was different…and playing a tier 2 county in a final (Clare beat Limerick in MF and Offaly in AIF) is way way different to playing a top Cork/KK/Tipp side in order to make a breakthrough.
