1985 Justin McCarthy talks up a storm

“I think 70 per cent of Tipperary’s wins back then [in the 1950s and '60s] were physical. The aim was getting the man out of the game, hitting him, putting him off, jolting him. And the other 30 per cent was hurling. You cannot go out and try to play the type of game which they played last Sunday. putting fellas out of their stride by giving them a jolt here and a handle there, hitting off the ball.” Thus Justin McCarthy in a Cork Examiner interview after the 1985 Munster final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, a match remembered as much for the rough-house tactics as it was for Cork’s six-point win in an eight-goal encounter.

The ensuing fuss saw the Tipperary county board threatening never to travel to Leeside again, county secretary Tommy Barrett declaring that no Cork player had been “badly hurt” (so that made it alright then) and John Doyle speaking of the possibility of “a big reprisal”.

Yet one assertion made by McCarthy was certainly validated after Babs Keating rode into town a year and a half later to preach the gospel of skill and style. When Slievenamon awoke in 1987, it did so because Tipp went to hurl Cork out of it, not sledge them out of it.

My father often says the same. It was always going to take a south Tipp man to get them away from the sledging, as much of an eejit as babs is, he’s a pure hurling man for the most part.

Where is that extract from wtb?

Your work on the phd doesn’t involve history, or GAA, or a bit of both by any chance?

Unfortunately no.

It’s not for nothing people say that they haven’t won too many since helmets were introduced.

McCarthy actually retracted that statement after.
The Tipperary teams of the 50’s and 60’s had some of the greatest hurlers to play the game.

3 All-Irelands in 32 years isn’t great really for such a county. Galway have that many ffs. Offaly have more.

Is Antrim/Dublin streaming?

1-7 to 10 at HT.

Ah of course they did, you don’t win All-Irelands by just sledging. But i’m sure McCarthy meant what he said, but retracted to keep the peace.

Dubs beat by a point. They deserved to be beat. 4 points up and thought they had it won. Antrim get it back to a point with a min to go. Dublin no. 23 gets the ball in antrim 21 and inexplicably shoots for goal and dribbles it wide. Antrim then go down and put up two scores to win it.

Wow. I’m genuinely shocked by that result.

Fair fucks to Antrim

Dubs took off dotsy and mccrabbe thinking they had it won. They deserve everything they got.

This doesn’t say a whole lot for Clare

Unbelievable.

Great win for Antrim, poor start for Dubs to the weekend.

:o Astonishing from Daly if neither were injured.

Could be all over for Dublin in a matter of hours…
