Official All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 2010 Thread

They were probably at their height then alright. Then again last year looks like a blip when you consider this year’s performances. They could well be at the 2008 level again.

Well if we do get near 2008 level it would need an incredible performance to beat us and it would be the match of the century if it happened.

Some blip

No, too early, i was there in '78, but for obvious reasons i have no memory of it. I believe that Wexford were in control of one final alright, but i think scoring was a problem. I’ve seen the match since, but it was years ago.

Runt - I f you want to get in just pm me.

'77, Wexford scored two goals in the first seven or eight minutes.

Exactly

Just watched the match in full there…Certainly was a tight tense affair, some display in centre back play from Brick Walsh, absolutely outstanding…Young Lawlor seems to be getting better with each game, what age is he lads, he is far from the finished article but he is developing into a solid full back

I’ve watched the first half so far - Brick is immense, Connors is a great find, a skillful hurler.

Christ though, what happened Cark? I mean, right, Sean Og and Jerry were gone, but they were awful in the first half. Cussen hasn’t a clue and Aisake’s terrible. Amazing the difference between the two teams, Waterford taking every scrap they can get, Cork giving everything they have away, so wasteful.

@Puke, Lawlor is about 24-25… Was on the panel out of minor under Justin for a few years, and played football for a couple of years. He is highly spoken of in ''Working on a Dream"… very intelligent footballer, but a huge talent as a hurler, and I reckon there is a lot more to come from him if he builds his confidence

Connors is having a great year but people talk of him as a ‘find’ this year. He was an all-star nominee last year, u21 again next year.

Brick is a legend, put under a bit of pressure the first day by Cussen but was reaady for him on Sat night. The real encouraging thing though is the strength of the panel. Ok, you have the experience of Dan, Ken, Eoin Mac, Kearney (inj)… but then you have the future as well… Philip Mahony, Martin o’Neill and Brian O’Halloran from last years minors, Stephen Daniels, Maurice Shan, form the previous year and Tomás Ryan, Shane Fives, Adrian Power from the previous year… all of which could break into the team before the year is out and make an impact.

I hope Tipp manage to make a game of it on Sunday.

Galway lads would always have had a great respect for Tippereary down the years.

May the best (hurling) team win

To have 3 off each Minor team is great, there will be at least another 3 off this years team.

Waterford are actually in decent enough shape with regards to the age profile of their panel and Kilkenny aside they seem to have the panel with the most depth at the moment, great to see that Dan and Ken weren’t even the first 3 subs used on saturday, ken didn’t even come on…Murphy, Browne and Seamus Prendergats aside they have a relatively young starting team…

Did Ken not come on in extra time? They were talking about it, but with all the furore I never noticed if he came on?

No, his brother came on alright…

Well its not like they’re not easy to tell apart, but I was sure Marty was going on about Ken being readied for action.

He did alright but he was never brought on, he looked off the pace in the 10 minutes he was on the field the week before

I thought Noel Connors and Richie Foley were the only new players in the Waterford team worth talking about at the start of the championship. Since then you’d have to say Shane O’Sullivan has been very good for them and Lawlor looks reasonably solid although he’s yet to face a good full-forward. The biggest change has been the improvement in their workrate and their willingness to support the man in possession. Defensively, they’ve been transformed and if they been able to defend this well under Justin they’d have at least one All Ireland by now. I think their problem is the decline in their attacking play and the absence of any star player arriving to breathe new life into the forward line. Tomas Ryan, Thomas Connors, and Brian O’Halloran are all good young players but they’re not quite there yet. Molumphy, Seamus Prendergast, Kevin Moran, and even Shane Walsh are all better suited to supporting attacks than leading them. Waterford will be tough opposition for anyone but whether or not they can outscore Tipp or Kilkenny is the question.

Its their attack i have issues with, certainly the system doesn’t lend itself to big scores.

I would agree with that Kev. Without Mullane their attack is toothless enough. They won’t beat Kilkenny or Tipp scoring 13 - 15 points.

Not a chance. And Davy won’t leave the plan now. But i suspect a Munster title and All-Ireland semi final with a good performance is what he wants this year, and sort out the backs. He’s certainly heading towards completion of that, and i think next year then bring through a couple more of the natural young forwards they have. They have a fantastic midfield, which will get better.

Now maybe he has plans for using them more in a semi final, but supposing Tipp get there, i don’t think any of them young fellas (O’ Halloran and Shanahan being the last used) would make much progress this year against the Mahers, Fanning, Curran and those lads.

Still though, he’s doing a great job, and Waterford are setting themselves up for a bright future.
