Won’t be allowed.

Take a club like my own.

We have a young lad eligible next year who we have been waiting for with about 5 years, deadly inside forward who will score 0-4 from play per game.

Like most rural clubs we need him now at 17-18, we cannot afford to have him nearly 19 before he’s allowed to play. It’s absolutely ridiculous if this goes through.

Grand, you clarified to Julio

But is that not the case? It goes back to u18 and u18s won’t be allowed to play?

Yes that’s what is being muted in some quarters.

Was it that bad when first year minors were allowed play adult hurling?

That’s back around 2013 and before. It also worked fine.

It was a great way for 16/17 year olds to play a year of junior before ready for the first team at 18. Some were able for senior straight away and we’re fine too.

You’d wonder is there something to the theory that the earlier exposure to adult hurling meant players were ready for senior intercounty earlier.

I think the last year of it was 2015 as we threw Dylan Walsh in for a game against Mullinahone and he got 1-2 or 1-3.

I’d say that but that u20 rule at inter county also.

The underage grade changes are a total mess

I think the biggest problem is fixture congestion that if it goes back to U-18 & lads are allowed to play adult grades will cause.
If a lad is good enough to play senior. The senior manager will want him training & playing with the seniors all the time.

Club will fold if he doesn’t get to play next adult year.

Rural club destroyed.

Oh my.

It’s almost like we’re going round in circles here.

That’s very amusing.

If they’re that small theoretically there will be years when they’ll have no 18 years coming through.

The clubs will have to sit out out those years as obviously they won’t be able to field adult teams.

The Wexford minor premier final is on tomorrow.

If that was u18 and the 18 years were playing adult also it wouldn’t be on for at least another month or 6 weeks.

School competitions have to be suspended if u18 games are to be played mid week in conjunction with adult games at the weekend.

Iv seen it mentioned here a few times about the Barrs and Ben O Connor. Did he actually play minor with the Barrs this year?

He’s too old for what minor is now, u17, no?

Is there not a different cut off for County and club? Was a couple of lads in our club were ineligible for county minor but eligible for club (I thought) in last few years… But I woukdnt be close to it

It’s a really silly argument against it. The team will just be slightly less good. For a year. If the gaa wants a more predictable streamlined fixture list there will have to be less of fellas playing for multiple teams. It’s either one or the other.

If they go down that route so be it, but if so then it needs to go hand in hand with a guaranteed meaningful number of games for minor players.

If they introduce this but then stick with 4 groups of 4 type minor championships then all you will do is lose players.

I dont think lads on here understand the mindset of 18 year olds at all. They are, or at least think they are men. They want to be playing or at least togging out with an adult team. They can drink, drive etc and are probably too cool to be spending their entire year with a load of 15 or 16 year olds.

Lets be realistic most Minor Club teams train maybe twice a week maximum with a game. Remember an 18 year old will have no other team to play with for the majority of the year as Under 21 wont be played until November. So that’s 4 nights of nothing really to do. Driving laps around the local town is probably what they’ll do to fill their time. I am firmly of the belief 17/18 year olds need to be doing some bit of hurling 5 nights a week. Most only love it.

I have seen in my own club 17 year olds who can’t play senior and they are stuck in no man’s land really.
