At that age getting them to squat, hinge, lunge and land correctly will be all the speed wirk they need. Their next speed window is around 15-17. Its all about strength & movement around then. But thats generalising too, individuals can differ.
And a bit of consistancy in warm ups is all that needs
I think I’ll go with your advice Kev. Some of them are fucking disasters when them go above a fast walk. Hands and arm movement all wrong, running on their heels etc. I’ll give them an hour later on posture and try and get an extra burst of acceleration into them. All pretty basic stuff. Sure it’s the time of year for it.
Agree with everything he’s saying. Championships for 12 year olds and younger are for the adults, not the kids. Glory chasing coaches are the biggest obstacle to skills development and real enjoyment of the game developing.
I’d disagree with this somewhat after having coached a few u12 teams. There is no “championship” in Limerick just a finals day at the end of the year where all the clubs come together and play a small blitz. Invariably after the last game is over the older lads ask “is that it” or “do we not get a trophy ?” and end up going away a bit disappointed.
The only difference really is they don’t get a trophy at the end. They still play a round robin group. The scores are kept, results go up on the system, teams are graded for finals day by where they finish in the league.
Once they hit 12s they need championship. Dress it up what way you like. The best of them want and need it. A few of the do-gooder hippies fight it, but their kids are normally gone to full time radish munching by age 13 anyway.
I put a heap of mammies in their place a few weeks ago.
Set your stall out hard first.
you are a coach, you deserve respect on a level with a teacher. you are a teacher in fact, esoecially in the modern world.
you need respect from the kids, with some thats tough love, with others thats an arm around the shoulder.
you will make mistakes, just like they will as parents. Deal with it, learn from it, move on. child/youth/athlete is central to everything. its not about you and its not about them.
you are not a babysitter
unless you are out of line parents should support you and the team in general. everyone should play, alot.
Majority of top sportsmen have fantastic movement from a very young age, hence they pick up skills easier. Its their clear advantage. they have better control of their body than everyone else.
Never coach. you are not made for it. You are only interested in the elite players.
