49 years ago today, a man surfed over a shark in a leather jacket and cut off jeans
@MogwaiC86 10 years ago since the most cinematic climax ever to an All Ireland Final.
A hungry feelin’
It was still bright but it felt pitch dark
The gloom was Kafkaesque
It was Gaelic football’s answer to Film Noir or a spy thriller set in Eastern Europe
Some of those crowd close ups from Cillian O’Connor’s last pointed free to the end are ICONIC.
You’d go to war with that Mayo girl bellowing after that last pointed free.
Then the two fellas with absolute laser focus just before the wide as a gate free. Definitely neutrals but serioush, serioush football men credentials there.
Then Stephen The Bullet Bunting looking desolate as he sees it slipping away yet again for his beloved Mayo.
It’s all kicked off between Madrid and Barcelona today ![]()

What kicked off?
A soccer match?

25 years ago today
Three years ago today Hamas perpetrated the third largest terrorist attack in history.
That’s not what RTE say. The first item on the radio news at 5am this morning was the fourth anniversary of the explosion at the petrol pumps at Cresslough and that there will be a commemoration there today. The second item was that there would be commemorations of the attack on Israel in which 1200 were “killed”. They didn’t say by who. They did point out however that Palestine Authority say that the IDF have killed 74000 people in retaliation.
Saturday October 17, 1987. Rangers (9 men) 2 Celtic (10 men) 2.
1987, my first “autumn” of following association football. One of the most ICONIC Old Firm clashes ever played. Pure sulphur. I kept up to date on this one through RTE Radio 1 live, BBC 1 Grandstand live and the following week’s editions of Shoot and Match.
Celtic made a proper bollix of this one and surrendered a 0-2 lead to only draw 2-2. It was the only point Rangers gained against Celtic that season.
The IMAGES are iconic. Frank McAvennie and Chris Woods engaging in scenes none of us want to see and both getting ORDERED OFF. Peter Grant holding the back of his head with his hands after failing to beat stand in goalkeeper Graham Roberts in a one on one. Peter Grant bathed in sunlight, on his knees looking to the heavens after beating stand in goalkeeper Graham Roberts. Stand in goalkeeper Graham Roberts conducting the orchestra of Rangers supporters singing about Fenian blood. Peak fee fi fo fum Terry Butcher who is ORDERED OFF. The earnest, Presbyterian seriousness of Jock Brown’s commentary.
The pantomime nature is this match is glorious.
