Five years ago today. Tipperary humiliate Waterford in the Munster hurling final.
At least that Waterford team could console themselves with the knowledge that many of them were near retirement and would not have to suffer many more humiliations at the hands of Tipperary.
Today’s young Waterford team, in contrast, can only look forward to many more years of similar thrashings.
14 man Donegal put in as good a second half performance as you’ll ever see in an Ulster final the same day. Poor old Tommy Ryan drew the short straw in the All-Ireland final, but he was sensational in this match.
Trivia: this match was the final time they wore their Kerry-style jersey as their “home” kit.
Because they played Mayo in the semi final, changed to the predominantly yellow kit, and decided to hang onto the jersey for the final, due to it being “lucky”. The reason they chose yellow was not because of the yellow in the Donegal jersey, but in fact due to it being the colour of Ulster. They merely changed the trim from black to green to suit themselves.
The rest as they say, is history. I’ve heard before about Donegal using a yellow trim jersey on and off in the past, but theres conflicting stories on that. Nembo might know more.
Donegal had used the Ulster colours of yellow (sorry, saffron) and black against Meath and Fermanagh over the previous few seasons but the jersey for the semi-final against Mayo was specially designed for the match, they also had switched sponsors from Donegal Creameries to Magee between the Ulster final and the All-Ireland semi-final.
Donegal had toyed with using their current colours of a gold jersey with green shorts before - they used them in the 70s.
While the below video is in black and white it would appear they wore a gold jersey, green shorts and white socks when they won the Ulster title for the first time in 1972. They definitely wore their current colours in the 1979 Ulster final against Monaghan. By 1983 when they won Ulster they were wearing the Kerry-style jersey with green shorts.
Trivia: Kieran Harte who is Mickey Harte’s cousin and was the Tyrone goalkeeper who made a disastrous mistake at the end of that 1972 video, is the father of Bandon, Co. Cork twins Conor and David Harte who will be playing for the Ireland hockey team in the Rio Olympics. David Harte is the goalkeeper and team captain.
