On this day

33 years ago today- Heysel. The story of a father finding his daughter under the rubble dead still haunts me.

Unreal.

I was at the drawn Leinster Hurling a few weeks later and some of the Australian team, including Allan Border were sitting in the row in front of me. They played Ireland in a One Day the day before in Castle Avenue. That was one of the great games of hurling. They were mesmerised by it. One thing they couldn’t get over was John Power and Liam Dunne knocking lumps out of each other from start to finish and the ref turning a blind eye to it. Different game now (hurling). Cricket too. There’ll never be another spinner like Warne.

That Wexford team were very good that year . A 3 game league final with cork and the classic Leinster final draw . The equalizing point that day merits comparison to Ciaran’s .

Wex were better that year than in 1996 .

Did they give you a nice pat on the head and send you home wrapped in a warm joe.ie blanket of irishy goodness?

I was watching the first hour or so of one of the test matches from Australia during the winter there a few years back and Shane Warne for some reason brought up hurling in commentary and mentioned that the 1993 Australian team had attended a match, but he couldn’t remember who was playing. He said he knew it was a final. Somebody tweeted him that it was Kilkenny v Galway in the All-Ireland final that year and he read that out, seemingly thinking that that was the game he had attended.

I tweeted him the details of the relevant match that he had actually attended, having attended it myself and heard Tim May and another member of the team whose identity I can’t remember being interviewed on the radio at half-time. Warne didn’t read out that tweet though, which made me mildly miffed.

Shane Warne of course was no stranger to handling a Hurley himself.

Was it Steve Waugh or Ian Healy that was interviewed at the game and said it was “medieval”?

Steve Waugh famously said that number 6 just tried to decapitate his opponent, I assume now from reading Sir Geoffrey above is a reference to Liam Dunne. For years I thought he meant Pat O Neill

Today is World Productivity Day.

So let’s kick back and enjoy it.

A good slugfest here about Clay v Grass ; or ulster v non ulster football or the lack of European teams at WC 2018 will do wonders for productivity .

I’m reading lads on the WC thread who would never dare attack Ronaldo normally and I’m thinking “when the cat’s away the mice will play”.

'Twas on the 23rd. of June - the day before the fair…

Carry on…
