Opinion: Andrew O Shaughnessy(Limerick hurler)

100%

Andrew Quinn was another lad who was special at underage and schools. 4 years on the Clare minors. Played in the 99 Munster 21 final as a first year minor. Main man on the Flannans three in a row side. Had the hands but not the legs for senior. Never came close to delivering on his promise at senior level, had a handful of decent games til Mike Mc got rid of him in 2008

Did you ever see Niall Ronan play underage or Harty? He was as good as O’Shaughnessy in my opinion, never translated fully to senior hurling but he has a few All Ireland medals to console himself

I’ll say no more about AOS as the last time I said something I walked into an ambush of invective

Jason Forde was as good a Harty Cup player as there ever was

No, before my time. I always liked Ronan as a hurler. He was fine and stylish

I think the tragedy of Shaughs is that he was just coming into his own when, unfortunately, his prime was taken from him.

He came into a Limerick team that was, well, shite for most of his career. However he gave some serious displays in 2007. He tore Clare and Waterford to shreds in back to back games. Often forgotten too, was how good he was in the league in 2008. He scored something in the region of 7 or 8 goals if memory serves, and on a misfiring team.

I’m confident he would have gone on to be one of the best in the country, much like Horgan, Reid and Callinan all did after slow starts. Unfortunately he never got the chance.

He really wasn’t.

Niall Healy another. As good a minor as I saw, apart from one day v kk in 05 when everything fell for him he wasn’t up to senior at all. I had great hopes for Quinn

Did you see him?

I saw him a few times. He was very good but the say he was one of the best ever harty cup players ever is silly.

He would have be 14 years old when AOS retired, which explains why he wanted us to rate him ,those of us who saw him play

I remember Gavin O’Mahoney giving as good a display at Harty cup level around 2005 against a very good Flannans team. Ran the show from centre back and nearly led Kilmallock to a famous win.

Cathal McInerney put in some incredible harty cup displays.

Nail on the head there.

Ronan Lynch was another outstanding harty player.

Cian Galvin was a rolls royce in Harty this year gone. That coming off an excellent summer as a minor. He’s my new test case.

We had five on the Limerick minors that year.

Shaughs is a brother in law of Seoirse Bulfin, Davy’s right hand man.

Excellent player underage. Didn’t reach those heights senior, although he had some great games. Seemed to have a decent 07 from what I can recall. Think it was a pity that Limerick were robbed of him by 13/14 as he might have been the difference then. Think he’s rated sufficiently outside his county

Do you mean Neill?, he was tremendous underage and at Colemans also put incredible scores up at club level with Ballyhea. Older brother was strong underage too but not the same ability.

The best harty Cup player I have seen was Jason Forde.

He led a hard working Nenagh side to the all Ireland after being beaten in a harty final.

In that season he was double marked as Nenagh played a sweeper. In the semi final played in Tipperary town v ASR he got one of the greatest scores I have seen. With a draw on the cards he caught the final puck out of the game in front of the stand and hit a no look shot from 60 yards to win it for Nenagh.

One of the most underrated hurlers currently at IC. He has good days ahead though when Callanan moves on and he leads this Tipp team.
