If global then people will just move tax residence. You get a brain drain. Happened in Sweden too. Destroys entrepreneurship. Much lower self employment rates in countries with wealth tax.
Anyway my point wasn’t about merits or otherwise of wealth tax but the likely result of SF coming to power is people with money being nervous and taking steps to protect that at least for a period until it becomes clear if SF intend on going down the Hugo Chavez road.
Sweden had a wealth tax for over 70 years and only recently got rid of it. They were very strong economically for most of that time. It’s a bit simplistic to judge it unsuccessful.
of course , its obvious what will happen if / when they do get into power, itll be the worst thing that will happen for them really for they will be totally exposed and theyll end up like the Greens, itll set them back 40 years
I would think they are capable of anything, anyone pulling in >70k a year would be fucked , taxes on a second property would be massive, they’d drive corporate tax thru the roof and YES i believe that they are capable of doing anything with the banking system, the "tax the rich"malarkey wil be taken to extreme levels to satisfy the baying mob
In fairness we don’t know that. A left wing party has never gotten into government with reasonable platform in free state so I suspect at worst they’d be little more society driven and less beholden to big business.
New poll tomorrow:
FG 25 (-5)
LAB 7
FF 23
SF 21
OTH 24
It’s a Sindo produced poll so contains, this gem of a line:
“Sinn Fein is also unchanged at 21pc suggesting the party’s rise in the poll during the child sex abuse scandals has stagnated.”
I’ll be honest, never voted for FG in my life, but I’d have them back in as a majority party in the next election. They’re the best of a bad lot and Irish water aside, haven’t done anything majorly wrong. SF have been shown up for the Spoofers they are in the last few weeks. Party politics has it’s disadvantages, but a haype of independents would be a disaster in government.
