Sonia O’Sullivan made a really valid point on some podcast I heard in the last few weeks that to properly perform in an Olympics, it’s rarely the first one. She was saying in context that we should have sent Rhasidat to Tokyo as she was concerned about her. It struck me that I think all our medallists and proper prospects have been there before aside from Rhasidat.

In her view, the whole experience is so overwhelming that you need the experience of one to help with how you prep for the next one.

I can’t really remember what was happening in 2021 but Gillick and the Carks said Adeleke should have gone to Tokyo 2021 on the relay team for that reason. Perhaps she’d emerged onto the scene a bit more during the enforced year long delay but they must have went with the original squad or something?

The ladies 4x400m didn’t qualify, only the mixed team did which meant they had less spots. Healy and Becker were chosen. Still odd they didn’t bring Rhasidat as Sharlene as the 3rd or 4th lady though

If memory serves, she had never ran a 400m outside relays. Her relay times were way better than her rivals but it would have been harsh on the others not to bring them

This kind of backwards thought process needs to be stamped out. The brits got great Olympic success from targeting specific sports to excel at invested in them. Typical LoL league mindset, we will never win anything in soccer at international level. We all want to qualify for major tournaments so we can have a piss up. Burst every soccer ball in the country. Indoor cycling and badminton definitely we could produce world class athletes in. Table tennis another easy one. Maybe shooting and archery also. A great investment here

We’ve a young lad in Year 5 (5th Class) who’s already in the pathway for Fencing. They reckon 2036 maybe 32. He’s British champion at U11 and 8th in Europe despite being U10
