Missus Barnes and my 8 year old daughter were in Dublin Airport yesterday morning and they spotted Sarah Lavin. My 8 year old was staring at her and over comes Sarah unprompted and presents her with an Olympic pin! She will have the whole Barnes household rooting for her anyway.

I also think the flag bearers should come from the sports where an Olympic medal is the pinnacle - your runners, swimmers, gymnasts etc - rather than folk competing in the likes of tennis, golf, football. But I’ve great time for Shane Lowry so it’s a very minor quibble.
