Christie won a soft 100 metres title in Barcelona. Carl Lewis failed to qualify for the US team. Lewis would have blitzed him.
The first British athlete that I can remember really was Brendan Foster winning bronze in Montreal in 1976 in the 10,000 behind Lasse Viren. That was a dismal Olympics for Great Britain. Even with the African boycott, it was the only medal won in Track and Field.
Donât think Iâve ever hear anyone with a bad word to say about Brendan. He was of Galway stock too.

Looking at the javelin here, & I get having a competition based on how far you can throw it. But I think thereâs room for a competition that tests deftness of touch too. It wouldnât necessarily have to be a javelin but landing something into a series of zones/areas with the distances varying from one round to the next. Anyone who prides themselves on being able to nonchalantly fling paper into a basket from their desk could become a national hero.
