Paris Olympics 2024

Possibly Hugh Cahills finest moment of the Olympics.

We are going in 2028. I told the little wan this evening, and she told her Mammy.

It’s been said so many times but the margins at the top level are just ridiculous. 7 medals is amazing, but 11 wouldn’t have been unrealistic between the relay, the sailors, a dodgy boxing judge or two and Rhasidat kicking on a bit more from Rome. A couple of Hugo Keenan brainfarts eliminated could even have made it 12.

You’d just hope it inspires thousands and thousands of kids, especially young girls to just get out and try more sports.

Let’s not forget McIlroy firing a ball in the water in McIlroy style. Another potential medal gone there.

Savage!

7 medals is a great achievement, now is the time for serious investment and aim to get into double figures for LA, we were competitive across a whole range of sports and with the right structures in place there is no reason why we can’t evolve and improve.

We all know the villain of this games is Keenan who dropped that ball twice against Samoa at the start 6 weeks ago. A pure bronco gadget mullocker. This is Osborne at 15 country now.

Sure look, what was he supposed to do?

I know it has been said that European Olympics are the best, and I sort of agree, but when you get a good Olympic venue outside Europe there’s probably more of a feeling of bigness about it all, at least as a television viewer. Sydney had that. Sydney had a tremendous feeling of bigness about it. Time differences create a feeling of bigness. Tokyo would have had it. Rio didn’t. Beijing had a feeling of bigness but also of something more negative. Atlanta felt big but also felt like the Coca-Cola USA USA USA Olympics, it felt a bit cheap.

LA is the spiritual home of the Olympics in North America so it could be good but the Athletics being in the first week is a bummer and could lead to the Games petering out a bit in the second week. When you get into the second week it becomes all about the Athletics and you’re scratching around a bit for other worthwhile stuff to watch which isn’t the case in the first week.

LA will definitely have a feeling of bigness around the Athletics though. LA '84 was the last Olympics before I became a properly conscious human and a bit like Mexico '86 I was sort of angry it passed me by.

If the organisers of the opening ceremony or the BBC have anything about them they’ll do a recreation of the video for Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack with Sha’Carri Richardson voicing the words while walking through the streets and Simone Biles etc. practicing their sports on the sidewalk as she passes them. However I associate that song with Paris as I went to Paris for the first time the same year it came out. I also associate it with the Olympics because RTE used it for some radio series previewing the Sydney Olympics.

24 years ago I was at this Saturday night of the Olympics in homebush in Sydney. I was working in the gymnastics/basketball stadium next door and snuck in the main stadium with my accreditation. I had no seat and was expecting to be thrown out so kept moving around. Any way of finding out the list of events? I think I remember seeing mo Greene, Marion jones and Michael Johnson running relays and Sonia coming around 6th in the 10k.

A great night out. And we’ll do it again next year. Spotted a couple of Tipp jerseys and wondered if it was @peddlerscross and a friend. Thankfully I didn’t have to queue for those shuttle buses. A veritable feast of Wexford GAA spots. I’ll be a shook man for training in the morning.

Who’s doing the marathon commentary on RTE with David Gillick?

The 1500 for women definitely wasn’t on anyway. Oh sorry it was the 5000m Sonia got a silver in.

French girl striking for home and making a break for it with 30 kilometres to go.
