Peninsula Thread

As a new resident of the greater Howth peninsula area, I would be interested to know what the finer eateries in the local are.

Are you wearing an oven glove mate?

no im slydexic now fcuk off

You are quiet right to have these reservations Fagan. Howth Head is indeed a tied island.

Is the plural if peninsula peninsulae, or peninsulata?

You’re an idiot. We’ve had this discussion before. Isthmus is your only man.

Coffeys in the Superquinn centre is a very reliable neighbourhood caff, serving copious portions. As we move into Howth taking a left onto the West Pier, I generally pass Ivan’s which is by now a fairly sad relic of the Celtic Tiger. Next up is the Brass Monkey, a mid range restaurant serving hearty helpings of fish. Then we come to the slightly more swish but less popular Deep which I have always found perfectly satisfactory.

Next up is the jewel in the crown on this stretch, the Oarhouse, which survived an almost calamitous menu makeover last year. Good fish is the order of the day here, served from an open kitchen by a lovely team of experienced waitresses.

Next door is the tiny Octopussy, a super little tapas bar. Try the black sole if it’s on as a special.

At the very end of this pier, is Aqua, a restaurant boasting the most spectacular views. Pricey, but the sea views render it a great spot for a special occasion, such as popping the question.

Back on to the main road are the Findlater, Casa Pasta, El Paso and Okra Green, all of which are generally unremarkable. Beshoffs and Cafe Caira are on this drag and are both solid chippers. At the top of the East Pier is East which is new. I had a lunch there recently and it was fine. Next door is the Grande Dame of Howth restaurants, the King Sitric. Again specialising in high end fish, think turbot and lobster rather than cockles and mussels, I find the place stuffy and outmoded, the service overbearing and cloying, much like the Thermidor sauce. Eyewateringly expensive.

Up the hill onto Abbey Street, the abbey Tavern serves food, but I have never eaten there. Next up is House, a great restaurant for breakfast, brunch ,lunch or dinner. Imaginative, modern and not terribly expensive, it’s a gem.

Two doors up is Ella a small but presentable wine bar/bistro.

Two other mentions. The Big Blue opposite the Cock Tavern has reopened for the nth time, now as a tapas bar. And finally upstairs in Country Kitchen beside the Church you’ll get a fine breakfast or lunch.

House is a terrific spot. Haven’t been there for dinner yet but it’s superb for brunch.

Has that Coffey’s place been done up recently Fagan? Weird menu mainly waffles the last times I was there. Golden Elephant at the Cross also worth a mention.

Tomorrow promises the perfect storm that all us Peninsulans dread. The Cemetery Mass coinciding with a perfect summers day will mean utter gridlock all day for us Peninsulans. I hope to get down to Superquinn early to buy provisions but after that I will be confined to base.

Anyone out for a handy day trip tomorrow should avoid the Peninsula.

Eat the breakfast early and then go to mass. At lad of your age needs to reacquaint with his maker sooner rather than later.

Yesterday was madness. I walked from Bull Island to Sutton Cross quicker than the cars alongside me. The Dublin Bus Costal Tour Bus, which wasn’t open top, looked pathetic with forlorn passengers inside moving at a crawl.

With Cemetery Sunday on that will make roads impassable alright. I have to venture to Clontarf at lunchtime, I’ll come home by the Howth Road and then cut through Black banks and Bayside to avoid as much coast as possible.

Great summary there lads. I intend bringing my Australian maid to the joys of Dublin on our return, I won’t go wrong with the advice for Howth anyway, an area I love.

I don’t know, but I can tell you that the area between a females gut and her cunt is referred to as her “Gunt”

e.g “Christ, but would you look at the size of the gunt on that one.”

The term is most commonly used when referring to fat women.

Yes kev, Howth is beautiful but best enjoyed on a quiet weekday.

Wonderful traffic advice from Fagan and I navigated a lovely route home via Blackbanks and Bayside with a short trail of appreciative motorists behind me.

Ah yes the owl Bayside shuffle.

Just wondering how accurate/hysterical the accounts of antics on Howth Beach and surrounding areas on the Joe Duffy show today were? I didn’t hear it myself but someone I met today was full of it. I decided to consult Ireland’s foremost authority on matters Fingalian/ Howthian !*

*not aware if anyone has actually claimed this but it’s the impression one gets from reading old threads ( great diversion when one should be writing especially when you tell yourself it’s research)- a strong impression of authority is garnered

I didn’t hear Joe Duffy. I was down the West Pier on Saturday night about 8.30 and all was quiet. The Gardai were very visible earlier in the day and it sounded like Dodge City with all the squad cars screeching up and down the main road. Sutton Dart station was shut to ward off a beach party, apparently and then there was all sorts of hugger mugger at Howth Dart Station with the Gardai checking bags for drink.

That’s all I know.
