I donāt mean a Harry Kane, a Frank Lampard, a Steven Gerrard or a Wayne Rooney, I mean an English Modric (Jordan Henderson) or an English Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Suarez, Xavi, Iniesta, Zidane, Pirlo, Mbappe, Hagi, Stoichkov, Alaba, Gullit, Van Basten.
The greatest English footballer of my lifetime, I am quite sure, is John Barnes, who wasnāt English.

English players peaked in the 60s,no great ones since
Peak Owen and 2004 Rooney are 1A and 1Alpha in terms of effectiveness of the modern era of English footballers I have seen.
Greatness is interesting, like the Georgian and Dembele, Rooney was pulled early in a Champions League Final (08, for Nanii).

A very common theme with England has been either tactical dumbness of talented English players or reluctance or lack of knowledge about how to use maverick talents. Or petering out due to injury or laziness.

Le Tissier was too slow. He needed a team built around him, he needed a free role and he needed space, which English football of the 1990s was only too happy to provide.
Heād have been a great man to pull out a spectacular goal once every World Cup for three World Cups running, if heād played for Cameroon.
Steve McManaman should probably be in that 25.
