Portugal v ROI- WCQ 2022

Ireland Holland 2-2 game in Amsterdam WC qualifier in 2000. Blew a 2 goal lead but a great game if I remember correctly.

Most people talk about the home game though

@Cheasty … Did we play France away in around 2004/2005 also and played brilliantly?

Yeah watched it in a pub in Brisbane early morning. It was a recording of the game that was played about 5am but no pub could open at that time. Nobody in the pub knew the score. Different times pre smart phones!

Kilbane played centre mid alongside Keane. Played a stormer too.

O’Sheas debut game? Or was he missing in that game can’t remember.

France 0 Ireland 0.
Saturday October 9th, 2004.

We should have won but with Roy Keane in the team we were afraid of taking that next step.

Eamon is all in for Kenny

Richard Dunne was a collussos out in Russia in a huge qualifier, we were destroyed but got a result,

Last night we were miles off Portugal in truth

Fairly sure O’Shea played for Ireland before 2004

Dunne and Given were immense.

Dunnie had to get the number drawn onto a replacement shirt after he busted his face off the running track at one stage.

O’Shea made his debut in a friendly v Croatia and gave away a penalty. Think it was either just before or after the 2002 WC

Watched it with nana in Chicago. 20 bucks to get into the pub

ah we had a few cracking games under queen and poppy o kneel in 2015
Germany at home, BiH home and away and Italy in Lille
It went to shite after that allright and has been a very rough last few years
That 2018 Nations league campaign was the nadir and tbh under dick maccarthy it was bad also.
But yeah i understand the young man’s point- it’s felt like 10 years…i got a bit of a lift off that last night
whatever we can say - gah , rugby whatever - but our soccer team under kenny is heading to be box office as the the man would say on here

Did he give away a penalty late on in a friendly against Croatia in 2001? It was in August, a few weeks before the Holland game. 2-2 draw I think.

The Trapatoni era was the nadir for me. Mind numbing stuff.

Dunphy on about dark forces in the FAI trying to force Kenny out. Is Cathal Dervan still with the FAI?

We were so desperate to get to a major finals that we /I put up with Trap (until 2012 at least).
Could have also been cos I was free and single at the time I was up for travelling to South Afrcia (had we qualified) and to Poland (great trip despite the results).

That night we put 4 past Estonia was a lovely evening all told

no… i cant agree
we drew with the italians x2 and were phenomenal in paris but yes the 2012/13 campaign was utterly horrific
BUT it cant be as bad the that period from Denmark beating us 5-1 right thru to the 2018 NL, my god almighty , that 0-0 on a Saturday with Denmark, the games with Wales.
The absolute worst tho was the 1-0 in Gibraltar, McCarthy’s first game back when hendrix scored… that … that was the worst of all time… maybe raise me with the 0-0 later that year in Tblisi

I don’t think we’ve ever** conceded two late goals like that to lose have we ? other heartbreaking last minute goals I remember were Macedonia Keith o Neill didn’t mark up at a corner, Italy in croke park and possibly suker with an outrageous touch from a long ball.

**Since jack Charlton invented soccer.

Whenever O’Shea’s debut was against Croatia (was it start or end of the 2001/02 club season?), I recall big Mick holding firm and not being swayed by calls to bring him to the World Cup.
