Portugal v ROI- WCQ 2022

The players changed the game plan against Trap’s instructions in Paris. Outstanding performance. Against the minnows under Trap was woeful stuff.

Ireland vs England 88

Clear memory is England euro 88… Can only recall vague memories before that. Was at the home qualifier v Spain for Italia 90 , Went with Star Rovers.

You do realise who Mr Trappattoni replaced and where he brought Ireland

First clear memory was the 2-2 draw away to Netherlands in 2000.

That was a tremendous campaign.

Trap is a genuine managerial legend

Some people upset he didn’t have us playing like the Dutch ‘74 team

I remember this vaguely. Brady getting sent off in 87.

But Euro 88 was the first main memories

Ireland 3-2 France is mine. I’d have to check when it was.

Edit: 1981

Mine would be Tony Polster walking all over us late on as Austria beat us in Dublin in 95

1-0 at home to Netherlands in 2001. I remember watching a rugby international against Scotland about a week later and being perplexed that they weren’t kicking it into the goal when they repeatedly got near the line. Scotland hammered them that day too.

There was some buzz around the 4-0 win over Estonia in the last group game. Had extra-curricular activities during the away defeat to Iran so was relieved to hear we’d done the job 2-1 on agg. First Ireland jersey that Christmas.

Christ I watched that in a pub in KK city Lording back pints.

The best performance I’ve ever seen live from anyone in any sport was watching Pirlo against us in Croke Park.

I didn’t really watch the match, I watched him. He hardly broke a jog all night, completely dominated the game and I don’t think an Irish player got within 5 yards of him. It was mesmerising to watch him

2-1 loss at Wembley in 1985 is my first vague memory of watching Ireland.

The home USA 94 qualifier vs Northern Ireland. I recall Steve Staunton scoring from a corner. I believe it was a midweek afternoon game.

We had those Baltic countries like Lithuania and Latvia a few times in the 90s and would walk all over the cunts.

The mid 90s was great for attending games. The old landsdowne Road was magnificent

I remember being let home from primary school early to watch afternoon qualifiers.

Did Kilkenny even have a city in 2000?

yes that was normal enough , especially for the 89 90 91 qualifying games.
by 92 for the start of usa 94 qualifying I was in first year so we had a half day Wednesday anyway.
I think ireland 1 Spain 3 in September 1993 would have been the last ever Wednesday afternoon qualifier
