Ricky Hatton’s taunts may have had the desired effect and tempted Floyd Mayweather out of retirement.
After Hatton’s stunning fourth-round stoppage of Jose Luis Castillo in the early hours of Sunday morning, the IBF light welterweight champion challenged Mayweather to a multi-million-pound super-fight.
Both fighters are unbeaten, but Mayweather had previously insisted last month’s victory over Oscar de la Hoya would be his final bout.
Now, Mayweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe claims Hatton’s jibes have paid off.
‘He got Floyd’s attention. Now we’re calling his bluff,’ Ellerbe said.
'All he has to do is make a deal and he’ll have his chance to back up all that talk. All that’s standing between him and Floyd is air and opportunity.
'We can make the deal this week. He’s very, very disrespectful. He’s trying to promote himself off Floyd’s name.
'When we make the deal, we’ll show the world why he’s the most overrated fighter of this decade.
‘Floyd has never taken any fight personally. But he’s taking this personally. Floyd is going to kick his butt.’
Ellerbe revealed Mayweather was far from impressed by Hatton’s performance against Castillo at the Thomas and Mack Center, Las Vegas.
He said: ‘He said he only wants to fight the best - then sign the contract. Floyd’s going to show all his fans in Britain just what a phoney he is.’
I’d love to see Hatton smash that Mayweather coont up.
This fight is getting close now. Seeing it advertised in Times Square just made me realise how big this fight really is. Having seen more and more of Mayweather I really hope Hatton can do him in. I mean kill the fook in the ring, punch the fookers kidneys out
jeez flano you dont honestly mean that.
dont let the media circus drag you in like a lemming.
i am a fan of Hatton but he’s a fighter not a boxer. mayweather is the opposite obviously and i think he will run away from hatton for 12 rounds picking off a few jabs now and then and win on points in his home country. if the fight was in britain i think mayweather would wear brown trousers. and would lose
Mayweather is just abhorent to me. Hatton just strikes me as a decent punter whereas Mayweather acts like a ganster rapper. Really gets on my nerves. As for the outcome, not seen much of mayweather except on youtube but he obviously has a bit of class and is certainly no mug, I just hope that Hatton can make a show of him(even if it is unlikely)
Mayweather is 5/1 to stop Hatton. Seems like decent odds (and I think they’re a touch longer than expected because of the concerns over Mayweather’s hands). Any thoughts?
Well the other night I was watching that HBO special that followed the 2 fighters and their preparation for the fight and Mayweather hits like a girl. Also Mayweather hasnt knocked anyone out in 8 years(not icluding TKO’s)
