Everyone with any sort of food will open the 29th of June. Anyone who doesnât will go mental and theyâll be allowed to open as well.
The Irish are great at finding the grey areas and operating in them
Agreed but then theres this. Youâd swear they were just making thing up as they go along or something. Do they think things through when theyâre doing their precious media bits I wonder sometimes
Taoiseachâs comments on pubs opening
Speaking to Today FM on Wednesday morning, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: "The key for us is if itâs possible to open a business and maintain good hygiene and social distancing.
"The truth is that in a pub it is very difficult. Pubs had to close before they were told to close because they werenât able to maintain social distancing in a number of cases and the difficulty then for the publicans - and I really feel for them - is if they do maintain the two metre rule, they might be able to open - but would they be viable?
âIt is something weâre determined to work through with them, but as things stand, we wonât see pubs, nightclubs, entertainment venues open until mid-August.â
Events will overtake that timeline. Once they start lifting restrictions everyone will start moving and gathering whether they like it or not. Beer gardens in the streets will get us through the summer. Itâs going to be epic. We might never go back
I can see myself really embracing the pub as a concept
One video of a crowded bar and they will be closed. Micks cannot be trusted after a hape of pints.
The bars will have to be on their best behaviour for a few weeks
Lot to be said to go to a bar and have table service and a bit of comfort but will bars be viable.
People will go once they open as a novelty but having a table in a bar and effectively being stuck there ainât what the younger crowd will want.
The first thing they should do is ban phones.
Only the bigger ones will be able for it. Hopefully the rural ones can find a car park or a space outside to make it work
Thatâs the lateral thinking that will get us back where we need to be.
A couple of days. If Paddy goes balloobas it will be game over.
I was talking to a publican who said the toilet issue was also a big one. Youâd need portaloos or people will spend whole night queuing for a piss.
They have business interruption insurance but insurance company is resisting on basis of some technicality about when pandemic was declared etc
Varadkar is a fan of going off on ones - bizarre ones.
He launched into Mary Lou ages back for a perfectly reasonable question on banks not paying taxes.
He said something also about the postboxes staying red in Belfast when there was absolutely no need to antagonise the Unionists.
He also said he would love to stop a particular contractor ever bidding for a public service contract again (ie BAM).
With regard to COVID, he said recently that kids were the safest people and it would look bad if we were the last country to open schools. He was then shot down by Dr Tony,
He seemed to suggest recently that pubs with food could be brought to the same time as restaurants, now he has shut that down going so far as to question the viability of pubs.
He is a strange one.
The schools one wasnât strange tbh. HIQA had just released a report on it.
Holohan the Horrible wants to keep the ratings up for his daily press conferences.
Primary schools & creches seems a no brainer. Open them up in June, thereâs only a few weeks of primary school left then anyway, and you can see what the fallout is then in advance of September
Surely the bar counter will still be an option, every 3rd high stool? Not using the counter afaik was merely a suggestion that came from the LVA? Still fucked up when you think about it, whole point of it is chatting to the geezer beside you, fuck it pubs are fucked, possibly forever?
The bartender is then at risk if people sit along the bar.
I donât think the pub is fucked forever. Things in six months may look a lot different,
I wouldnât see the point in opening schools again now until September
Parents can go back to work?
