Question for the techies

The ran the cable externally into sitting room and it stops there at the modem box in the corner. I think I could use Ethernet cables but looks like I’ve been found a solution within 2mins of asking on TFK.

Nice one so I should plug cable from modem downstairs into one of them, while upstairs if I put the second one into the wall beside my desktop and I can plug desktop straight into that fella then and we’re away with it?

You’ll have a few ports on the modem. One of these is for the Internet coming into the modem. Don’t touch that.

Plug an Ethernet cable from the modem to one home plug.

For the other plug just connect the Ethernet cable to the PC.

Not the same?

It better be

The TP-Link Powerline adapters are a great job, I’ve been using them myself for years. I don’t want to be worrying you unnecessarily but the security/encryption on the Powerline adapters is most likely the same as the security on your wifi. So you might as well be using the wifi.

Ok, your wifi signal is probably accessible outside your house, but remember that the powerline signal also is. They communicate over mains wires. Mine work in my workshop 100 metres from the house, so your data, encrypted or not is buzzing around your neighbourhood.

Anyway, your biggest worry is your modem. It’s your landlords. Has he been messing around with the settings? Have you access to the settings to make sure it’s firewalled and secure? Otherwise you could be hacked from outside.

All very fanciful I know, but if your worried about using wifi, be more worried about the security on your modem.

Definitely hasn’t, he couldn’t even believe I could connect the wifi to my phone, he’d been using roaming on his phone when he was living there. :grinning:

How would I make sure his settings are firewalled and secure?

I’d say if you changed the password on the WiFi you’ll be grand

You’ll need the modem IP address, username and password (not the wifi password). All came with the modem documentation. Then you need to go into it and check the settings. If you’re not comfy doing that, then you’d have to get an IT guy that you trust to check it for you.

I’ve run a few scans against your IP address there and it looks secured.

The quality of the ransomware being deployed at the moment is frighteningly good.

It’s also massively under reported.

Maersk’s entire global infrastructure was wiped by out.

When did that happen to maersk?

Maastricht University were done just before Christmas. They ponied up 500k in Bitcoin to get the encryption keys. Over 400 servers were locked down. They weren’t back properly until the 7th of February.

Did the keys work?
That’s very high risk, but 500k a hell of a lot cheaper than trying to recover any other way.

NotPetya, a 2017 Russian cyber attack on Ukraine that went out of control. A belter of a story.

I read the full article at @artfoley 's link above. It is a good one.

I knew the previous CIO there but have not seen him in a long time. Would be interesting to talk to him now.
