RAVENOUS (Part 2)

Another point on pubs and restaurants. In this country pubs and restaurants worked financially only when the gaffer and the entire family worked in the establishment. In the Celtic Tiger a lot of publicans got hepped up on borrowed money and imagined they were some type of tycoons and filled their pubs with expensive staff. It was always going to end in tears.

The VAT thing is a pure cod. The idea that people will come back out ating in their droves if their mediocre steak is ā‚¬36 instead of ā‚¬38 in bullshit.

Itā€™s a very naive outlook these young chaps have nowadays.

The businesses are busy, theyā€™re just not able to turn a profit, is my understanding.

Then they are in the wrong business.

Nah, Iā€™m spot on here.

You can get a steak and chips for lunch in Marco Pierre White or FXB for about 30 euro.

FXBs or Bovinity are as good if not better than Hawksmoor but less salubrious dining room.

Shanahans was of its time. Itā€™s too stuffy for most diners these days.

Dobbins reopened recently. There was some damage done there on Friday afternoons late 1990s early 2000s.

Reality is their real agenda is the extra 10% margin they can put in own pocket is what might make their business viable

I actually think that fundamentally in the current environment there are hundreds, nay thousands of unviable businesses out there through no fault of the owner. Payroll will be up the guts of 20% based on min wage increases over past few years with ambition of Gov to get the min wage to 15 euro per hour within a few yearsā€¦

Cheers for that. Have ended up booking a late lunch in Etto as itā€™s a small group. Plans could well change before then

Thatā€™s also a great spot. My only comment would be itā€™s very tight inside.

Itā€™s sister restaurant Uno Mas worth looking at too.

Really disheartening yet again to read @gilgamboa whingeing about minimum wage workers getting a few extra quid.

Most places only offering carvery on a Sunday now. Including the home of the Leinster carvery of the year 2019. The carvery tradition would be under threat altogether only for our affluent senior citizens liking for such a dinner.

Iā€™m thrilled for them pal. But itā€™s a typically populist government move, like double dole and childrenā€™s allowance that feels good for everyone who gets it but are any of us really better off? Iā€™d say the 40 quid a week wage increase someone on the minimum wage got last year didnā€™t go far offsetting increased rent, electricity costs etc etc

Might be a good idea alright pal to reduce the cost of living for those folks on minimum wage. Maybe that could be done by increasing taxation on the wealthier in society as opposed to leaving people earning below the living wage standard?

I thought it was because of an EU directive based on absorbing the minimum wage into a living wage by a certain period of time ?2026 or 2027. So it will most likely rise again over next few years

Iā€™d be fine with that. But the crude approach taken just drove inflation
