Black people are allowed use the word as it is the one thing they are allowed to do that white people are not allowed to do. Given the history of how whites treated blacks as property (the era the word comes from), it seems a reasonable compromise.

It is perfectly socially acceptable for me as a white person to refer to my Hispanic and southern European extraction mates as beaners and wops, just as I don’t take any offense when they refer to me as a wigger, mick or potato head. The n word is a socially illegal word, in particular for white people to use. The fact that some black people use a variant of the word (“nigga”) when speaking with each other has no relevance.
