Republic of Ireland v Georgia 12/10/19 - Switzerland 15/10/19

I have no real idea what the average wages would work out for the players in the squad, but lets say 15k a week for shits and giggles - there may be a small bit of disquiet out there that lads on this kind of money would look so incompetent at football.

no one is advocating against pragmatism.

you can pick more talented players at your disposal and still be pragmatic.

I don’t think many people are looking to play a gung-ho, we’ll score more than you, Kevin Keegan approach.

Kell surprise - taking the conservative approach.

The last two managers were ran for plaing that way.

They weren’t . They were ran for bad results . When they qualified for tournaments they weren’t ran . The football wasn’t easy on the eye then either .

They were constantly questioned over the style of football being played. They may each have gotten a seasons grace, but little more, results or otherwise.

I’m not advocating champagne football. We have a strong defensive set up and need to make sure we are not leaking goals.

I do think that certain talented attacking players are being and have been excluded in the wrong over the past few campaigns.

Who was excluded in the wrong ?

exactly, there was no progression, they stagnated. Big Mick is only back a wet week and it’s already stagnant. Thankfully, if we qualify there is already a plan to get a more progressive man in after it.

Wes Hoolihan.

Wes Hoolahan, Andy Reid, Jack Byrne…

do you see a pattern?

Liam Brady was left out by Charlton…

it’s left footed Dubs… It’s discrimination

In defense of Mick, he was always a short term appointment. He’s in there to get us to the Euros by hook or by crook.

Starting Collins ahead of Connolly and Whelan ahead of anyone is not pragmatic nor will it make us harder to beat. Very much the opposite in fact

I agree on Wes . Andy Reid was a talent but a luxury . Jack Byrne is decent but as long as he plays LOI managers will be slow to bite

We need a presence up front . For all the talk about connolly’s impact ( and I think Connolly will be a star ) at the weekend his 2 big plays came from a hoof forward and a piece of poor control by a Georgian defender after a bad Irish cross .

Would you believe that Hoolahan was one of the most utilised players of the O’Neill era?

McGoldrick is a huge loss in that respect. A great man to play if you go the hoofing route

Collins offered nothing up front against a hugely inferior defence the last day.

Agreed
