Republic of Ireland v Georgia 12/10/19 - Switzerland 15/10/19

Was that the karate kick game?

Yep.

there is more evidence that he could play on the RHS of a back 3 that playing doherty as a right winger in a 442 or a left full in a 442 at the moment from what i can see
Doherty deserves a chance to be played in his correct position - he is our best attacking player and is consistently doing the business in the EPL and now Europe - i think its an utter shame we cant go out with a full attacking mindset, play our best man in his best position and try and actually win this game
ok - lets compromise maybe and put Long in there in a back 3 with duffy and egan who i think is very unexposed? but my god…, he (long)was in the horrors v bulgaria and simply does not play enough fooball

To accomodate Doherty at right back then Seamus Coleman will have to be dropped. Given that he is the captain and his form has been solid it isn’t going to happen. Shifting Coleman to the right hand side of a back three does nothing to help the balance of the side. Doherty played a season at left back for Wolves previously while Coleman has no experience of playing in a back three.

Doherty deserves a chance at right back but he is stuck behind Coleman unfortunately. He is a decent right back but not a transformative player who the whole team should be built and rejigged around.

I agree with that and I endorse the selection of Doherty at left back.

Is Doherty really that much of a prick? It was hinted at in articles even before O’Neill was fired and he went on the radio.

What’s specifically the problem with him? cc @Little_Lord_Fauntleroy

Agreed. Whatever about playing players out of position, completely switching to a back 3 or back 5 to accommodate Doherty is too much, particularly when it displaces one of our existing reasonable players. We would do some amount of sideways passing around a back 3.

Seems lost on a few lads McLean isn’t a left back and Egan plays in a back 3. Coleman is much experienced.

Greg Cunningham has done his ACL

Doherty isn’t a left full either. McLean has filled in there a couple of times for Ireland.

I wouldn’t go changing a whole defensive system. Especially considering we’d be putting a full back in one of the three centre half spots. Coleman isn’t a good enough defender for it.

Sure either Egan and McLean will be out of position or just Coleman who’s vastly more experienced. Wolves regularly play three at the back too so wing back suits Doherty.

Egans a centre half, he won’t be out of position.

He’s playing in a three for Sheffield. That’s where his career has taken off. He’s very inexperienced at this level. It makes sense to play a formation that he’s used to. Whatever about left back you’d figure McLean would be less rubbish at left back and Doherty regularly plays wing back. Coleman probably played in a three under Bobby Martinez too.

you can’t change your defensive system because of what system one of your players clubs use.

I know a few lads gone over to this. Flew yesterday to Riga for a few nights, before travelling onwards. Match tickets 2 euro.

Why wouldn’t you pick the system that suits the players available as opposed to rigidly sticking to a system that doesn’t suit the players?

it may or may not suit one of the players. Egan.

you’ve got less than a week to prepare your team how to defend in a new system at international level. It’s not like he’s got a pre-season to implement a new defensive system.

Didn’t Mick play Steve Finnan in midfield for a few of the 02 World Cup games?

Jesus this Georgia game is massive. They always seem to take a result off of one of the big teams so hopefully they’ve gotten it out of their system
