Republic of Ireland v Portugal - 11/11/2021

He was in Copper Face Jacks afterwards?

I didn’t say “got the shift”!

Fantastic night at the old ground last night. The levels of drunkeness around the stadium was a sight to behold

I thought Idah made a big impact off the bench and gave us a focal point for the final quarter.

Some very questionable characters in that Portuguese squad.

It’s all a bit WWE and panto… middle aged men booing a guy, who made a holy show of them all by giving a star struck little girl the shirt off his back at the end.

Also as I predicted beforehand the inexperienced Spanish officials weren’t up to it.

They’re two separate things to be fair. He got a great big cheer for that gesture. A bit panto/performative alright but I don’t see why anyone would really give a fuck whether he was booed or not.

I don’t think anybody gives a fuck except the lads defending their right, as middle aged men to boo somebody at a football match, for no apparent reason, when I slightly criticized the behavior. I hope your voice is ok this morning

A long way off the authoritative standard of Bjorn Kuipers and Dr Felix Brych

I found myself nodding wholeheartedly with all of that. Lads can go fuck if we cant dig an opposition player. Shur tis all part of the pantomine that is sport.

My sense is he was booed because he was playing against Ireland. We’re Irish so we wanted Ireland to win and it’s a little match going tradition for home supporters (of all ages) to make noise. Not sure why you’re wetting the bed about it tbh.

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I could picture a few fellas on here standing up and pleading wholeheartedly with the home supporters last night to stop booing Ronaldo, and to think how it looked to those sitting at home.

And then getting a belt of a can of bulmers.

Absolutely. And we should celebrate that. It’s not meant to be rational. It’s not a folk music show or an academic debate about the merits or demerits of the 1916 Rising.

It’s all relative. Like if we were at home to Andorra & they kicked off then there wouldn’t be a murmur. But for as long as I’ve been going to Ireland games, when a “big team” kicks off the booing starts straight away. Who can tell with certainty what impact it has? But sure it’s just a way of saying to our foreign friends that you’ll get nothing soft here and out ceád míle fáilte doesn’t extend to the pitch or stadium…ha ha ha. Same principle applies at club games. Celtic Park isn’t going to be hostile for Dundee at home on a Saturday afternoon but there’ll be a wall of noise if it’s some English side in a European game under the lights. Booing, goading or whatever is part of the very fabric of football, panto and wrestling attendance.

Precisely. Tis all part of the game, rightly or wrongly. Fortress Aviva should be just that, a fortress.

Then you see this united snowflake and the replies

It is obvious.

the media fanboys really shaping the narrative here & @Mac lapping it up

the worst set of home results since 1972, thinking a win over Luxembourg would be good, 2 failed campaigns in a row yet their is positivity about spock

If one can’t take pleasure in performatively acting like an overgrown man child as part of a group of (mainly) men performatively acting like overgrown children at a football match, what can one take pleasure in?
