Retiring GAA Stars tribute thread - May cause brain/neck damage

Cooper managed to disappear from those games when the match was there for someone to win it. That’s what separates the Cooper from the likes of Canavan, McConville, McDonnell and O’Neill because when push came to shove these guys were there demanding it and delivering it.

Substance over style.

He scored more than any of those players managed from play in a similar situation, you can’t compare McConville as he’s a wing forward apparently.

He did not disappear. You are being fooled a few fancy finishes and flashes and fail to appreciate the game in its entirety.

He did disappear. He was nowhere to be seen when the heat ratcheted up, you’re being disingenuous and dishonest now - which is to be expected when you’re defending something utterly flawed.

He scored 6 points from play across two finals against the most physical team there was. In his latter years he lost the pace and strength he had but that shouldn’t take away from how good he was in his prime

Would you say that Canavan disappeared in the 1995 final against Dublin?

No.

I love how Canavan is being thrown up as the bench mark. Where was Canavan in 97,98,99 when Tyrone did fuck all in Ulster? Did he even score from play in those games they lost to Down and Derry? 2000 he didnt even score at all losing to Armagh. 2001 did fuck all when they did beat Armagh, and did even less when they beat Derry and then Cavan winning Ulster. Didnt score at all when Derry beat them in the quarters. 2002, did nothing in Ulster. Scored a good few points against Sligo in the qualifiers alright, even though Tyrone lost to them.

Obviously had a great 2003, but this notion of Gooch not matching Canavan or being there when it counts is stuff of fantasy. Do we conveniently just forget all of Canavans bad years and very little returns?

Scored one point from play, missed the free at the end to level the game and fouled the ball for the other chance.

I’m saying this and I believe Canavan to be the greatest I’ve seen to play the game, just ahead of Cooper.

Then again I’m not blinkered by bias and mantras of bullshit like yourself.

Seemingly so.

I’m not getting into another GOAT discussion with you pal…

As far as i can recall Canavan was fouled for a lot of the ten frees he scored that day.

I just agreed with you pal.

yeah, but it could turn very quickly…

Did he really get 6 points from play between the 05 and 08 finals? I’m not saying he wasn’t great. I just feel he is a bit over rated.

Unlike you on the football field.

He did.

More than any other inside forward managed from play against that defence.

ah sure I’m just like Canavan, there to pop over the handy frees and scores, let others do the work…

In this analogy would @Scrunchie be Dooher?

I think we should stop now before it gets any more out of hand!

Maurice Fitzgerald was a better and a more complete player than any of them.
