It was blown for a free, wasn’t it?
Walsh was brilliant. What a player. One of the greatest ever.

I thought Lyng ran on and popped it over the bar. There was no card given anyway.
And yes I agree.
If we hadn’t paid off all them refs, Tommy would never have seen the end of a game.

I thought it was a free with no further action taken but I was wrong twice before.
I thought he got a yellow for it and that it was a stoppage in play.
But I too have been known to be wrong before.
Edit, I’m mixing it up with when he had a coming to with Stephen Nolan when he came on as a sub.
Ironically enough, Barry Kelly was reffing the game where he flaked across Lyng
Walsh was a superb player. I’d take his flaws for his exceptional play.
Walsh is a hurling great. A great attitude, the way he carried himself on the pitch would annoy the fuck out of the opposition and he thrived on it.
He’ll certainly be missed. A real character.
Great man to let loose in the off season in his younger days.
:(:(
My favourite player of this era.
Nobody gave you that buzz of excitement quite like Tommy did when he got on the ball.

He could give it and take it. I love the way he just hopped up to play on after Benny Dunne nearly took his head off. His skill level was a joy to watch.
Living with a wife who is a great GAA fan and bitterly opposed to Kilkenny, Tommy became one of my favourite hurlers. He had a tremendous way about him, superb in the air, effective sashaying forward and cunning and devisive when it came to defending. He had and used a lot of talents, he was determined and brave, skillful and swashbuckling with an ear for the big occasion. His legacy however is unclear…his versatility may be his un-doing when the scripts are written 20 years from now. In the meantime may I wish him well, many’s the Sunday he came to my rescue, gave me cause to celebrate and I’ll nominate him as the best No.5 of the last 30 years.
That was class. As dirty a stroke as it was, no nonsense, straight up, game on. Softened my view of him at the time. Great, great player. Fairly filthy as well though.

It must be 20 years ago the morning of a h/f we were up near Quinns bollocksing around when we came upon Kilkenny supporters egressing from a car. Bantering ensued and a colleague of mine affirmed that
Pat Nail was the weak link in the KK team.
Fuck you says Daddy, he’s our son…Nail was MOTM. Always told against my pal…

He drove a mini for a while. Think it was aghanish he was working in, would get out in front of all the cars at shift end, wield a hurl out of the vehicle and na’ar a car could pass.
The interview after that final Boxty talks about. Marty Morrissey asked him what was the secret. Nail confirmed it was the cornbafe sandwiches!!

That to me is the real ethos of the GAA. Ordinary lads telling it like it is (or playing the rural card).
That Ard Comhairle speech (see you all in Coppers) sickens my hole…
