Retiring Rugby Stars Tribute Thread

He didn’t really.

Heaslip should have been more in the Ireland mix from 2006, but O’Sullivan was set in his ways. Eddie ignored lots of excellent players as he believed in focusing in on his core grouping. It took David Wallace ages to get back into Eddie’s plans after an injury struck him down. Keith Gleason and Johnny O’Connor both got in, they both got injured and suffered a similar fate. Wallace got back in.

He took ages to bring in Geordan Murphy as well.

It was his biggest failing as a coach.

In fairness I can’t believe he did that.

Isn’t there a load of, dare I say it, anecdotal evidence like this about Heaslip? It’s akin to the old saying I’m about to mangle “treat all people how you want to be treated - those who serve you & those you serve.”

Heaslip always struck me as being very personal brand orientated. #TeamOfUs, #HomeAdvantage, tweeting Aer Lingus, tagging their staff and stuff and putting on a fake endearing personality for the benefit of those up the chain, while not giving a fuck about harmless simpleton fans like @Mac.

Christ, the amount of social media accounts I’ve had to block down through the years to avoid seeing his fake gurning head (Heaslip’s not Mac’s).

A PERSON I KNOW told me that whoever runs his social media accounts apparently follows lots of randomers on an ongoing basis, get the follow back from star struck rubby fans, then a day or so later unfollow them, and repeat. Nice for JH to be able to say his account has reach of “X” hundred thousand or whatever when he’s lining up his next branding partnership.

I already said his social media stuff can be cringey.

He is very brand orientated and wants to be seen a certain way.

It doesn’t make you an asshole or overrated rugby player though.

On the follower thing, wouldn’t it be a lot easier just to buy fake ones? I would have also thought “star struck” rugby fans would already be following him.

You’re as badly informed on rugby as you are on most other matters. In the 2015 World Cup, there were 96 competitors from the start of the qualifying process.

@Tim_Riggins is seething with you mate

wow
i know the phrase “that never happened” is worn well out on here at this stage but fucking hell this post…

agreed

I doubt it. @Tim_Riggins is one of the few sane voices here when it comes to rugby matters.

he thinks you hate the “cowards of jadotville”

Did Paul Kimmage have some beef with Heaslip?

No he doesn’t.

Heaslip had some game in Chicago v NZ Did Eddie leave him @ home from French WC?

Yes. Denis Leamy was O’Sullivan’s first choice Number 8 for the 2007 World Cup.

Its been one of the main headlines on the BBC Sport & Sky Sport pages all day. The retirement of one of the greats of world rugby is seismic news.

he was one of the greatest of all time

I haven’t commented on his rubby - I’d say I haven’t seen a rubby game in around 6 years - but I was referring to his social media persona COMBINED with the way he’s meant to act when cutting about the place. My understanding is that he’s an awful arsehole, which makes sense given the rubby background.

sounds like he had a strong personal brand?

Very very strong. A great man to have banter with someone who runs the twitter account of an energy drink by all accounts.
