I agree in the main. You can’t excuse actual looting but it is clearly a symptom of much deeper problems which you’d have to live in a cave not to know about. The brits must have known that ‘the chavs’ would be more than a punchline someday. The ‘materialism’ isn’t surprising at all. It’s an obvious outgrowth of a society where consumerism and material wealth is endlessly glorified and advertised yet half the population can’t access that lifestyle (at least not legally). Cars, jewellery, gadgets, these are the things young footballers and musicians from tough backgrounds flaunt so why would the kids be any different? Anyway, people in most modern cities know this poverty exists across town from them, so they can condemn but they can’t be surprised.
The police response will be interesting in the aftermath of Cameron’s speech. A real chance of overkill and a strong possibility of fatalities if they get it wrong. Maybe the collapse of the economy might get back on the news by Friday.
