Rip Off Ireland - A thread for rip offs

Man who complains about Oirish prices flashes the cash on the mainland to keep up with the Joneses

Michael Carrick??

Observe.
I complain about the prices.

Paddy, shut up and pay your electricity bill.
Ireland Inc wants Paddy to subisidise Intels electricty bill.
Instead of addressing the root cause behind high electricity bills - our genius politicians want to let Paddy foot the excessive costs:

Semiconductor companies, such as Intel, are among the energy-intensive companies the government wants to subsidise under a plan for targeted interventions in Budget 2026 to alleviate high costs.

The Irish government has also sought a relaxation of EU state aid rules to allow it to subsidise such industries.

Ireland has among the most expensive electricity prices in the EU, and companies have been lobbying the government to intervene to ensure investment and economic output remain unaffected.

In the government’s newly launched Action Plan on Competitiveness and Productivity, it committed to “supporting energy-intensive manufacturing sectors” as a “temporary response to elevated prices”.

Peter Burke, the minister for enterprise, has written to Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, seeking a relaxation of European state aid rules.

Is it not saying that because our electricity os so expensive charging a car is expensive?

Our ‘green initiatives’ and accommodations for same in deriving the unit price of our electricity ?

It’s a circular fucking

Of course that’s the overall conundrum but the price EV users are paying is exorbitant.
You’re trying to convert the unwashed here but Government are stuck in the sand.

Its the price of gas making our electricity prices high

I’d imagine petrol prices are among the highest in Europe as well.

Yeah, being an island isnt great for importing fossil fuels

We’re fully connected by pipeline.

Absolute bull shit

And now you’ve been caught lying to push your failed fake agenda that merely lumps crushing cost of living expenses onto hard working paddy

You think its cheap to do it be pipeline

:gear: 1. How electricity prices are set in Ireland

Ireland operates a wholesale electricity market called the Single Electricity Market (SEM), shared with Northern Ireland.

In this market, all electricity generators (wind, gas, coal, hydro, etc.) bid to supply power for each half-hour period.

The price paid to all generators is determined by the marginal cost — that is, the cost of the last and most expensive generator needed to meet demand.

:fire: 2. Why gas often sets the price

Gas-fired power stations are flexible and dispatchable, meaning they can ramp up and down quickly to balance supply and demand.

When wind or other renewables aren’t generating enough, gas plants fill the gap.

Because they are often the last plants switched on, they tend to set the market price — even if most of the electricity at that moment is coming from cheaper sources like wind.

In other words:

Even if only 20% of Ireland’s power is coming from gas at a given time, that 20% can set the price for 100% of the electricity sold.

:moneybag: 3. So when gas prices rise…

Since gas-fired generation determines the marginal price, when international gas prices rise (due to geopolitics, supply shortages, etc.), the wholesale electricity price rises too — even though Ireland generates a growing share of its power from renewables.

 4. Why renewables haven’t broken the link yet

Ireland’s renewable capacity (mostly wind) is high but variable. Without large-scale energy storage or interconnectors to store/export excess renewable energy, gas is still needed to ensure reliability.
So until Ireland can consistently meet demand with renewables and storage, gas will keep influencing prices.

:zap: 5. What’s changing

Ireland and the EU are exploring market reforms to “decouple” electricity prices from gas — for example:

Contracts for Difference (CfDs) for renewable generators.

Capacity markets and storage incentives.

Future “two-price” systems where renewables and fossil fuels are priced separately.

In short:

Energy prices in Ireland are linked to gas because gas-fired plants often set the marginal price in the electricity market — and that’s the price everyone gets paid.

The government keeps telling us that we need to be connected to Europe to bring down prices. But it doesn’t seem to be working.

We need a plan to get rid of the gas alright.

It’s a huge benefit in the abandoned North West…… Pipeline my arse……

Benefits not being seen in the Southwest or Southeast to any great extent.

Any wonder muldoons are envious of their urban acquaintances….

Think we are connecting to France to get nuclear
