Robert Millar

Who remembers this Scottish cyclist from the 1980s? Cracking climber and won a couple of big mountain stages in Le Tour during the Kelly/Roche era. Anyway that’s him on the left in the picture below and that’s him on the right as well:

Turns out he’s had an operation and is now Phillipa York.

I think I do. He rode for Roche when he was in need of assistance did he not? Good luck to him/her!

Yeah I think there was some sort of deal between the English speaking riders where they’d help eachother if they didn’t have other team commitments or something. I think he may have helped him in the Giro d’Italia when Roche’s whole team abandoned him (to support an Italian team-mate in second place) but I’m not sure.

Quality. He’s from the era when I watched Le Tour religiously. He was a great little battler and always there or thereabouts in the mountains.

all those hours in the saddle must have worn it away .

Maybe he didn’t mean to turn female and it was just an unusual reaction to all the EPO he was ploughing into himself?

I’m reading the book at the moment “In search of Robert Millar” by Richard Moore. Excellent read so far. The rumours of him getting a sex change is b0llix. Something that the tabs put out about him. When I finish the book I’ll give you all the lowdown.

Was a big fan of cycling in the 80’s and 90’s but drifted away from it when the whole drugs issue came to a head. Millar was class, still the only native English speaker to win the KOM jersey in the Tour de France. Should have won the Tour of Spain too if it wasn’t for those pesky Spaniards.

Try to refrain from using “sex change” and “bollix” in the same sentence. http://www.thefreekick.com/components/com_fireboard/template/default/images/english/emoticons/grin.gif

Yeah, saw that alright. You catch my drift though…

I wouldn’t mind finding out about his ‘lowdown’ either.

Don’t want to spoil the book for you Locke but I think Moore was interviewed about these rumours the other day and gave a different answer.

Millar was a cracking cyclist alright. Wining the KOTM is a huge achievement. Even the fact that he was a vegetarian must have made it incredibly hard.

Anything in the book about the positive drugs test?

Is Robert Millar the mother of the other British cyclist, David Millar, that was done for drugs a while back?

Don’t see a big disadvantage in him being a vegetarian. Did Miller test positive for a banned stubstance? (Plane is delayed).

That’s a big enough delay - does it impact on your connecting flights?

Miller was banned for a few months for testosterone or something - don’t know whether he disputed it or not.

He was fined for the testosterone thing wasn’t he?

Well Robert sure as hell wasn’t anyway.

Bit lost here - are these jokes now?

Anyway I thought he got a 3 month ban.

Good book. Brilliant climber.

Juiced though. Ask David.
