McIlroy splits with long-time girlfriend
Golf: Rory McIlroy played last week’s British Open Championship having broken up with girlfriend Holly Sweeney.
The US Open champion’s management company issued a statement tonight saying: “Rory McIlroy’s long-time relationship with Holly Sweeney came to an amicable end before the Open Championship.”
The pair had a period apart earlier in the year, but 20-year-old student Sweeney, a cheerleader for the Ulster rugby team, was at Augusta to greet him after his hopes of winning the US Masters were crushed by a closing 80.
She did not attend last month’s US Open, where he claimed his first major title by an incredible eight shots and with a record score, but wrote on Twitter: “My fabulous boyfriend has played flawlessly all week!
“Drink up Northern Ireland, he’s done us proud! Champagne flowing .?.?. Sooo happy for the curly one! 1st major down, millions to go!”
Last night BBC screened a documentary featuring the pair together on his return from Washington.
Sweeney met the world number four when she was 15 and was playing with friends at his club Holywood on the outskirts of Belfast.
On their earlier split he said: “I want to put this time into my golf. You’ve got to do what’s right for yourself.”
Their break-up was reported to have shocked family and friends at the time.
McIlroy was favourite for last week’s event, but his bid to become the youngest Open champion since 1893 ended with him in joint-25th position.
Fellow Northern Irishman Darren Clarke won the Claret Jug and has been seen as something of a mentor to McIlroy ever since the youngster attended his Foundation for juniors.
Stablemate Clarke was asked today what help he could still offer McIlroy and
said: “There’s lots of advice, but I’m not going to share it with you.
“I will share that with him in the coming weeks and what have you, but in terms of what he can do, he is as talented, even more talented, than anybody on the planet with what he can do with a golf ball.
“It’s just a little bit of maybe intuition, maybe a little bit of direction from his old mentor that will point in the right direction. He’ll be fine - he’ll be okay.”
The pair both play next at the Irish Open in Killarney starting on Thursday week.

Rory McIlroy has revealed that he is likely to return to the PGA Tour from Europe.
The Northern Irishman said that he is “leaning towards” taking up his PGA Tour membership once again, having quit the United States to come back Europe, after playing on the American circuit last season.
“I spoke to a couple of the guys from the PGA Tour today about it,” the US Open champion said ahead of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio. “I am leaning towards taking my card up again, definitely.”
McIlroy believes that his golf is best suited to American courses. Two of his three professional victories to date have come in the United States, while he has yet to taste glory in Europe, with his other win having arrived in Dubai.
"I feel as if I play my best golf over here,” the 22-year-old continued. “I am very comfortable in this country and I am going to look at a few houses in Florida (after next week’s PGA Championship).
"I’m definitely looking at coming back and playing a full schedule here. I’ve thought about it and feel my game really suits playing courses over here.
"I love Quail Hollow, Memorial, Akron. You play Match Play, Honda, Doral, Masters - you have your favourite events and most of my favourite events seem to be on this side of the pond.
“I’d like to give it a go again and last more than one year and see how it goes.”

RORY McILROY and his Ryder Cup comrade Lee Westwood like to fire the occasional bitter tweet at each other but their exchanges have been poison-tipped in recent days.
Westwood landed the first stinging blow on McIlroy when he accused his International Sports Management stablemate of becoming “half Danish”.
The ‘banter’ started when McIlroy, who’d opted out of the Seve Trophy, suggested he was cheering on the Europeans in their spirited fightback against the Great Britain and Ireland team on Sunday afternoon.
“Is it wrong that I’m enjoying this European comeback in the Seve trophy??” he asked, later adding: “never cheered for Thomas Bjorn as much as I did today!”
Beaten by Dane Bjorn in the top match, Westwood responded through agent Chubby Chandler: “Thanks Chubb. Rory’s disappointed! Apparently he’s half Danish now!”
That thinly veiled reference to McIlroy’s girlfriend, tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki, was followed by a stinging tweet direct to the Ulsterman: “At least you made a choice on this one! What shall I be? Irish/British? British/Irish? Confused!”
To which McIlroy replied: “At least I’m not English.”
McIlroy’s former girlfriend Holly Sweeney then posted an appropriate riposte to both parties: “handbags at dawn!”
