RTE Sport

Yeah postpone shit like they do for the Budget or a General Election.

Cricket is shit-I’d imagine that’s why RTE aren’t showing it.

Never a truer word said.

But the public gets what the public wants… there were loads of lads I work with who watched every game of the confederations cup on RTE, there was much less talk about the world Athletics Championships.[/quote]

I’d say examples of that are fairly widespread. I’d also say the reason for this is that we are a nation of event-junkie, good-news-story-loving, glory-hunting sheep who happily digest whatever shite we are force-fed by RTE, and we don’t seek out the other sporting events which do have their merit if we bother our holes watching them. So more than a case of “the public get what the public want”, I’d say it’s a case of “the public want what the public get”.

I can’t stop singing The Jam

Even at that though, you are being fairly generous to RTE to accept that they’re only trying to “balance the books”. They seem to be engaged in something more than that, although I am not sure exactly what it is.

We can’t afford the Premiership, that’s the one thing I am getting from this thread. It’s a noose around our neck, and one we’d be better off without. I honestly don’t know one fan of English football who wouldn’t happily watch the highlights on BBC, and survive quite easily on that basis.

good point well made.

you say that like its wrong to follow a mainstream sport, like favouring EPL over LOI is wrong, but there isent a nation on the planet that would favour LOI over EPL and you cant blame the broadcaster for that.

You may as well be blaming RTE for the thousands every month who flock to Britain to watch it while the LOI has one man and a dog on the terrace. They go because they want to watch a soccer match and the LOI is shit.
Its possible those venting anger at RTE go to more matches in Britain than in Irish grounds.

agreed although RTE aren’t solely responsible for creating the breed you describe above. Its not in RTE’s nature to change, the presenters and management in the sports department are happy with the gigs they’ve got, I can’t see anyone in there rocking the boat and saying let’s get rid of the Premiership anytime soon.
Do we know how much RTE’s premiership rights cost?

The Premiership versus LOI arguement isn’t really the important aspect though, this is more about whether RTE spending significant money and resources on the EPL is a good use of their limited sports budget, especially when most people in the country can access an almost identical programme on BBC1?

more people would go to LOI games each week than would go to britain to watch football

Can you at least acknowledge that I said this two pages ago?

Yes yes but I only noticed it after my own

I, of course, in my turn acknowledge Paul Weller’s seminal input into this debate.

Worthy of a quote of the year nomination I’m sure. I, like the runt, have the jam in my head now and thats no bad thing at the best of times. *

  • I await farmers ok on this of course.

I thought Freddy and the boys won the cricket for us yesterday? Isnt that it over for now? Anyway Sky had the rights to the national sides games, RT couldnt possibly compete.

I’m not Larry but I believe they averaged around 50,000. Not bad at all considering the very off peak hours.

Uncouth phillistines!!! :clap::guns:

On the other hand, you name me a nation on the planet whose “sporting public” foregoes putting any time, money, or effort into their own senior domestic football league, in favour of a pathetic jersey-wearing, pub-dwelling obsession with a foreign league whose national team they then profess to hate?
