Limerick ‘bandits’ earn shot at UK TV series

COMEDY DUO The Rubberbandits have taken a big step towards UK success after Channel 4 ordered a 30-minute broadcast pilot off the back of their online music videos.

Shot in Limerick, it will be the first Irish-made sitcom for the channel since Father Ted .

The hip-hop comedians – Blind Boy Boat Club, or Boatboy, and Mr Chrome – are the first graduates from C4’s Comedy Blaps grassroots initiative, after three short videos posted on Channel 4’s website attracted more than 1.4 million views between them.

Made by Dublin production company Sideline and directed by Declan Lowney, who worked on Father Ted and Little Britain , the same team is making the pilot, which airs later this year.

“We like to call the British the ‘Craic and Tans’ now, because we’ve had so much fun performing for them,” said Boatboy (aka Dave Chambers). “We’re going to embrace the opportunity like a swan in need of help. It’ll be musical but with lots of different characters.”

Both he and Mr Chrome (Bob McGlynn) are writing at the moment and want to dispel comparisons to Father Ted or US show Flight of the Conchords , which blurred the conventions of sitcom and music promos.

“It’s a great honour to be compared to them,” Boatboy said. “But I try not to think about it because I don’t need the pressure to try to be as good as Ted, that’s impossible. It’s like trying to be as good as The Beatles.”

The plastic-bag-sporting duo did their debut UK tour last year, attracting strong notices in the Guardian and on comedy website Chortle. Boatboy, who is returning to London to perform next month, said: “I went over thinking, they’re not going to get the jokes but they started laughing exactly the same. So that was a big eye-opener for us. We really love them, they’re just like the Irish, except they’re more used to seeing shows and not getting drunk and shouting.

“We’re going to have to shock them with our minds, a bit of cleverness – Samuel Beckett- and Jimmy Joyce-style.”

Executive producer Billy McGrath of Sideline said: “We all share the strong belief that there is something unique and special going on with The Rubberbandits.”

Joe Duffy must be creaming himself at the thoughts of the outcry from their first show.

The last verse of this tune is pure poetry.

It makes up for what is otherwise a rather mediocre effort

I was listening to the start thinking this is the worst thing they’ve ever come out with, but that last verse is pretty catchy. The blond one near the end looks very familiar to me

Crap. Idiots. Embarrassing fair Limerick. FOAD.

Spoiling Ivan is absolutely brilliant and the extended outro of the latest tune is fantastic. I withdraw my comment about them retiring after Horse Outside.

Ah that’s fantastic… They have a go at everything from chick flicks to the marketing boys in tv ads. Top class.

These boys should have shared Limerick’s person of the year , 6 months each, just like the charity shield. Instead of that creep Richard Lynch…
