To be honest Fred’s views on the game are of little importance to a fan like me. It’s the fact that he’s talking while moving pictures are appearing on my TV screen that’s crucial to my enjoyment of the game. It takes me back to the good old days when rugby matches were incorporated into the schedule of that exciting saturday afternoon programme Sports Stadium. How many times have I heard his immortal line “Big push on here by Belvedere…TRY!” I know a few eccentric lads from that rugby stronghold of Kilmeedy who sometimes even drape a black cloth over their TV screen so that the (largely insignificant) action doesn’t take from Fred’s commentry.

I wasn’t referring to his views on the game, I was referring to the fact that he hardly even knows his own name any longer.

This in itself is not a great problem myboyblue, now if you tell me his speech motor control is starting to slip that would be a different matter. I am not a good judge of Union so if Fred tells me Con are rucking very well when in fact the game is between Dragons and Edinburgh, I take a rather “…'tis folly to be wise” sort of view on it all.

Thats fair enough SS, you’re entitled to your enjoyment of the timbre of the great mans voice. But for me, like Jimmy Magee and John Motson, they are all now an embarrassment to their professions.

A weak 2nd place in the European groups puts you into the Challenge Cup this year.

It will be interesting to see what crowds Munster would get for the Challenge Cup - I can’t see bandwagoners like mbb making the trip for it anyway.

Tipptops*, I’ll happily watch any one of the 4 provinces, much and all as it sticks in your craw. Actually, I’d do it even more in the hope that it would stick in the craw of folk like yourself.

A quick google of Fred Cogley has unearthed this bombshell from the PROC forum.

"Fred Cogley was responsible for the single most biased commentary on a match I’ve ever witnessed when he commentated on the St. Marys V Young Munster AIL decider in Lansdowne a few years back.

He’s a Mary’s fan and completely tore into not only Munsters but Limerick as well. Needless to say he’s not the most popular man around Limerick City."

Some lad called Eoin wrote this in 2006. Perhaps Fred is not the kindly old gramophone I thought he was.

Caoimhaoin, something that I have always found curious about the spelling of your name. Can you explain how the Gaelic convention ‘caol le caol leathan le leathan’ doesn’t apply to the Gaelic spelling of the name Kevin? With ‘i’ being slender (caol) and ‘a’ being broad (leathan) I fear your name may in fact be illegal. Can you shed any light on this apparent anomaly?
